I appreciate everyones help and adivce. swapped out CD unit and still no spark at #3 the strange thing is I had spark there on mon went out tues switch wires again and lost it. no when I go to start it it just sounds like a shot gun going off. checked woodruff key its fine #1 lines up on both fly and mark on block. have spark to 2 top cylinders you would think it would run on 2
cylinders. Im not sure what to do sell it? part it out? what is a fair price for it as is? comp 135 on all 3. lower unit works fine. comes with controls and the harness or should I part it out? would really rather get it running but dosent seem to be happening. guess I will remove all wiring, flywheel, stator etc and re check everything anyone live in portland oregon? would pay thanks

Re: Baffeled

Have you triple checked the wiring? You said you had it before you switched the wiring? Do you have a manual with the wiring diagram?

I think the way they run the wiring behind the mounting plate is not the best design, but it is what it is, but with a wiring diagram, it should be a simple fix.

Re: Baffeled

just tore down all ignition wiring. noticed 3 things #1) one of the green/w yellow stripe off the stator is running to the red wire from the breaker off the rectifier/selco says both sides should go to A/C. # 2) the CD going to #3 is wired up to the Red wire instead of what manual says that it should go to Orange. #3) shouldn't the wiring be different off the panel for this to run off the red? the thin sheet metal cover over center magnet on flywheel is not completly flat its just barley not touching could this cause a wild arch under flywheel?
thanks. this isnt going to beat me. never had a motor beat me and Im hell bent to solve this. thanks

Re: Baffeled

Agree PNW you would think it would be a simple fix like I said im going completly through it again. just checked both stator and trigger Ohm stator on both side are at 723 and all 3 of the trigger readings are 51 so seems there good

Re: Baffeled

Seems I need to rewire the #3 cd to fire on the red wire (extra) for it to fire on that how would I switch the cd around to fire on that extra wire off the panel? It has to be the white/green & red? over to #3 lead off trigger?

Re: Baffeled

The stator and trigger reading are within specs. "Normally wired" the orange wire from the CD module is used to fire #3 coil.

If you are trying to use the red wire to fire the coil, then yes, you have to switch the wires coming from the stator and trigger on the 12 position terminal block. If you're looking at the terminal block, reading from Left to Right, Left most terminal is #12, right most is #1. Stator wire that is on #12 needs to be moved to #11. Trigger wire that is on #6 needs to be moved to #8. Trigger wire on ##5 needs to be moved to #7. Be careful you differentiate between the stator and trigger wires, and you're not moving the wires that come from the CD Module itself. That will really mess things up.

Re: Baffeled

Just for the heck of it, why don't you try a set of QL76V spark plugs. They are an alternate resistor spark plug as noted in the 1st page of the service manual. I've found that sometimes a resistor spark plug, along with metallic copper core wires like these, helps direct the energy to the firing tip, while eliminating RFI (radio freq. interference). I'll be changing to these myself to try, once I get ready to run my boat, after the monsoon season stops

Re: Baffeled

thanks I'll look into them. Im so frustrated im staying away for the day maybe I'll see it from a new outlook tomorrow but WOW its such a simple motor. was wonering how to check the cd unit. if I switch to one of the other plugs on the other CD unit it sparks. I had spark at one time it would start run for second backfire and die but hey there was spark, at least I had something to work with at that point either timming or carbs I would imagine if I have spark and the plug wires are on the right plug it should run. I have the trigger lined up with TDC to fire Ive even advanced it to no avail. CRAZY WILD DAYS. so close yet SO FAR NICE BOATS MIKDEE!!! Im trying to just get one going its 90% here and in Aug the big 50lb'rs come through the Columibia would like to be road ready and ready to go!!!

Re: Baffeled

i had the exact problem with my 85hp, turned out it was the trigger for the no 3 cylinder, i would ohm it and it would show good but when the engine started it would go open and no fire to no 3 the wires going into the trigger break under the insulation because of the constant movement of the trigger just looking at it all looks good. how i found my problem was to hook up the meter [engine not running] to the trigger wires to no 3 [disconnect them from term board] get your reading then up under the trigger move the wiring around while watching the meter if you get any movement on that no 3 chances are youll need a trigger good luck, dont get frustrated, youll get it

Re: Baffeled

shouldn't this run on 2 cylinders? I know it will run bad but was thinking it should fire up on 2
