Newly unemployed bum just became a full time boat tinkerer!

Okay, so losing my job today isn't great news, but I hated the people I worked for and have a boat sitting in the back yard just crying out for a new deck and stringers. And now that I'm no longer working 50hr work weeks and 20hr weekends (for 40hrs pay) I'll have time to actually work on it.

It's tough when the big boss is the one causing the problems. You can't tell him he's a moron and you can't make a working project as long as he's in charge, either. Best bet, try your best and ride it out as long as possible. Allows for more boat money in savings.

Did I mention how excited I am to finally get to do some work on the boat!!

Ha! I thought the same thing...it would be nice to get laid off so I would have the time finally to do some of the things I haven't had the time to do, including the boat.

Welcome to your Gov't sponsored vacation!

I will tell the Gov to make sure all my taxdollars go ONLY to registered boat owners in the US! No boat, no Benies!

I hear ya about the self employment. I was self employed for 4 years prior to this past job. I took it because the company (Sporting News) was an old school company and the online division had tons of potential. Ended up being the craigslist-ad type of 'tons of potential'.

Leaves a slight change on the old adage.. "If you want something done right, work for yourself". And go back to working for myself I will.

Anyone need a website after I finish my boat? hehe

Well I remember from the "what's your job" thread that you're a web developer. I am one as well. I'm sure you'll end up on your feet. The market (at least up here) is slowed but still pretty good. I took a chance and started a new job this past December after putting in 6 years at a BlueCross insurance company that apparently had 0 advancement opportunity and so far so good. Good luck.

Thanks. And good luck on the new job. I hear you on the glass ceiling. I seems IT jobs rarely move up the poeple already there. The trend I've seen is that you often have to leave the company you work for in order to get a real advancement or pay raise.

On the 'land on your feet', yeah, I have a client who has been begging me to do more work for him since I started that job a year ago, so hopefully he has a nice backlog waiting. It's osCommerce work, so it isn't exactly fun, but it's work nonetheless. I have been dying to really get good at Drupal CMS, but work always took all of my brain power, so by the time I got home I was beat. The timing couldn't be better, as I was just beginning to hit that stage of "Man, I have too much to do and no time to do it".

There are a few jobs posted locally that I qualify for, but I'm looking more to get back to my old ways of consulting. My wife mentioned last night how much my tolerance level has gone down and stress level gone up since I began working for that company. Hopefully the next couple of weeks will allow for some relaxation and hanging-out-with-me time I so badly need.

Re: Bah! It finally happened...

The going-rate was outpacing my salary so much that I was able to get a 27% bump without too much effort (but who's calculating :) ) I really hated to leave my last job. It was a good company, I enjoyed the work, and had lots of friends there, but it was getting rediculous. They had these positions: Software Engineer 1,2,3 & 4 with absolutely NO way to get from one grade to another. I was a 2 and most of my buddies were 4s. They were more experienced than me and I certainly did not begrudge any of them their positions. However, most of them had been made 4s many YEARS ago. So while I certainly wasn't as experienced as them currently, I was more experienced than they were when they were promoted. There was another guy there who was our star Java programmer that was a 3 and they wouldn't make him a 4 even though he ran just about every major project. It was a joke. I don't think I have much chance for advancement at my current job as I'm the sole web developer but at least I got what I wanted when I came in.

Re: Bah! It finally happened...

now how you feel. Lost my job last Friday. I'd been getting 50-60 hours a week.

Will be moving on to bigger and better things, .......... hopefully !!!!!!!!!

(P.S. Our boat needs no work, just to be taken out, as soon as the ice melts) ;)

At least you have options lowkee,
I'm still looking myself...
Un-Employment is screwing me over....still fighting them.
Because part of my last year of working was part time because of my back surgery they are saying i can only draw 118 bucks a week...

I was a full time employee with a fixed salary...

Ah Gary that sucks. Hope everything works out for you. (and lowkee).

On another note, I thought of you today Gary when I clicked on this ad http://baltimore.craigslist.org/boa/1058520949.html I was thinking how sweet your boat turned out. If this had been an outboard setup I would probably go for it.

Re: Bah! It finally happened...

Here is what I can finally finish building.. I have been working on it all winter (originally hired a builder, but he turned out to not be licensed and at about 90% complete, it began collapsing!) So, I fed him to the dogs, tore the entire thing down, bought all new materials and began doing it myself. Note, I have no idea how to fram anything.. it was definitely a long term learning experience. I am in the process of attaching the plywood roofing, now. Once the roof is complete, I get my garage back (it's full of materials). Once I get my garage back, I can finally work on my boat! .. oh how everything waits on something else.

My boat is under the blue tarp. I built the shed last fall in order to move the building materials out of the garage, but apparently I have too much junk, because it was full before I even got to the lumber pile.
