If the rims won't take the balancing weights there are the "stick on" versions you can balance with.
Makes sense to balance if you can if you are doing more than a down the road distance.

i balance mine, but they are 14"...it cant hurt, it can only help make things smoother goin down the road.

i mount and balance my own motorcycle tires. and obviously use sticky weights. the clamp on kind suck. even for car tires. just use the sticky ones.

car tires might be harder though. for bikes:
you stick a pipe or the axle through the tire and spin it while its elevated, like on two boards. if it stops slowly without any heavy spots, its good. if there is a heavy spot, stick a weight on the opposite side and keep spinning until it rotates without any heavy spots.

Wouldn't think of putting tires on anything without balancing them..
