Hello all,

I took a look at my gears this weekend and they are due to be replaced, Looks like its my turn.

I already have some new ones and have been reading through my Seloc on the process.

Question, Do you have to have a press to remove the ball gears ? Are there any other ways to get them off of the shaft?

will a gear puller or anything like that work ?
what about putting the old one in a vice and pounding it out with a sludge

This is the only part of the process that has me worried , any tips anyone can give on this process would be great.

Also when it comes to putting the new ball gears on, do you have to press those on to get them started? Or is there enough thread exposed that you can just torque the nut on. My Seloc leaves alot to be desired on this section.

Thanks gents

Re: Ball Gears

A gear puller will work but you need the double horse shoe type clamp to go behind the ball gear. The arms of the puller have nothing to hook onto behind the gear. A sledge hammer would most likely damage the shaft. The new gears will bolt back on with no problem. The only problem is holding the gear in the vice while you torque the nut.

Thanks for the reply , Wrench.

Initially I was under the impression that just the shaft and ball gear will slide out , I didnt realize that the whole thing comes out as an assembly. So that will make it difficult to get gear pullers to latch on to anything.

puller clamp.jpgAny tool supplier should have one. One from a discount house should work fine. If you already have a puller, you only need the item on the right. A standard two jaw will hook over the center of the bolts.
They come in different sizes so you will have to measure what size you need.

Re: Ball Gears

perfect , I did some checking and Autozone rents these out, so that will help. That part o the left looks an awful lot like a steering wheel puller. I was going to use a gear puller but that is even better.

What are the chances I need a slide hammer to get the assemblies out ? the manual mentions it but it also says not always needed .

any other specialty tools I am overlooking ? my toolbox, that puller, some red loctite, all new seals.....

Re: Ball Gears

It's like a steering wheel puller but a lot larger.
If your operating in fresh water, you shouldn't need a slide hammer. I've never had too, but no guarantees. No telling how long it's been in there or if they greased the splines. Which reminds me, you should get some spline grease for the engine end of the drive shaft.
Other than that, if your toolbox is reasonably well stocked and you have a torque wrench, you should be OK.
