I need you restoration and smart folks help on this one. I went to get in my 2005 Baylinder Bowrider to find that my floor has ripples thought it. I stepped and at 300+ pounds will say it was interesting. I am not by far a DIY'r so I will have to pay to have the job done. If I have and it looks like I will have too replace the complete floor on my 18' length and 8' beam floor. Not to mention underneath damage. Can you ball park a price I should expect to pay?

Re: Ball Park Estimate

Well, it's a pretty wild guess since I've done every bit of work on my boats. I've rebuilt 2 now, and I'm guessing you can very well be looking at deck, stringers, and maybe even transom. Materials alone probably in the ballpark of $1000 or so, labor probably 2 or 3 times that (thankfully I don't have to pay myself).

Thats a relatively young boat to have those kind of issues, has it lived outdoors uncovered?

Re: Ball Park Estimate

If it's in the deck, it's probably in the bottom and the transom... but at that age it shouldn't be. Are you sure it's rot? This just doesn't add up for a boat that age. In the worst conditions I wouldn't imagine a fairly new boat should be that gone in 5 years IMHO. You've been a regular poster here for some time and I know you take care of your stuff, I just don't get it.

A 2005 with a rotted deck? You may be very lucky and the stringers have not rotted yet..
I have seen shops get 5k for jobs like that.

Ayuh,... About Twice as much as you paid for the boat...

Expect to pay 30% more than you were quoted and have it take 4 weeks longer than expected.

That's just a rough estimate...

My concern is in my time on this board....I've never seen anyone pay less than an insane amount of money for this type of work nor has anyone been satisfied with the results. In my opinion, it's a DIY job or sell the boat.

Dead on info there ezmobee! Many places will just put a new floor over the old rotted one and charge an arm and a leg...

I had one customer with a Crownline. He had one soft spot on the deck.
He found a shop that would do it the right way and the total bill was almost 10k! They found more rot under the floor and fixed stringers, transom and all.
They kept the boat all Winter.

This was a boat with a 5.8 King Cobra! It would have been sold on Craigslist "as is" if it were mine!

I agree with many of the posters here. 2005 with floor rot does not make sense. Might be time to make a call to the dealer you bought it from or to Bayliner. Many of the newer model boats have lifetime hull warranties including the floor and stringers. I would start with a phone call.

Re: Ball Park Estimate

I think his problem may not be as bad as everyone is making it out to be. I could be wrong (probably), but 'ripples' sounds more like plywood delamination than rot. Yes, it's moisture related, but I think the damage won't be all the way to the stringers, etc.

5 years is plenty of time for a carpeted plywood deck (or anything of that construction) to have issues. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, carpet does not belong in the open/exposed areas of a boat.

Guess as to cost? minimum $2k.

Suggestion - do not replace the carpet. Go with a non-skid that you can washdown, and that doesn't retain moisture. If you do the carpet thing, you'll probably have to re-do the floors before you sell it (or you'll sell it because you need to do the floors again). Non-skid will last decades with minimal maintenance.

Re: Ball Park Estimate

I've done a few stringer and floor jobs for myself and a few friends, and i've done a complete stringer, floor, transom on a 16 footer with a merc IO.

It's so labor intensive it's not even funny. If it's just the floor, and not the transom or stringers, figure 30-40 billable hours.
