Having trouble starting engine.
1972 6 cylinder Mercruiser
Printed on the coil is "Use Without External Resistor". Does that mean that i don't have a ballist resistor.I cannot find one? Also, what should "ohms" read on the wire from coil to distributor?
Not knowingly I have ran this motor with an auto coil that stated "Use With External Resistor".
I assume some coils have built in resistors. This correct?
Thanks

The wire is usually the resistor itself. Measure the voltage at the coil with key on. If you get 12v then you don't have a ballast resistor (or wire) in the circuit.

A 1972 engine will be using points unless it has been changed out. If it uses points then it needs an external resistor, either a wire or actual resistor. If we had your serial number we would be able to find the parts you need. Many auto stores sell resistor and non-resistor marine coils. They can also be found online as in the link below. Thie one below list for an OMC but should also work for you but as before we could use your engine serial number. With it not starting you may have fired the condensor, points or both.
