i have a johnson seahorse 10hp from i believe 1954 (could be 53 or 55) that bangs every few min in gear. was told the clutch dog is worn down. is this something i can just flip around into reverse or do i need a new one? also how much work would this be to do?

Re: bang in gear

you may be able to flip it. but it is a temporary fix, as the bad forward gear will wear out the other side.

Clutch dog, Forward gear, shift linkage--all are related. Fix one thing without fixing the others and plan on doing it over again later on. Waste of time and $money.

Re: bang in gear

I was just looking at one I have apart from an 18hp, and the clutch dog is REALLY worn and rounded, while the gears look pretty good. Are the clutch dogs designed to wear to protect the more expensive gears?

When I was a kid we used to reverse tired clutch dogs all the time. Who needs reverse anyway?

No, they are not. Sometimes it just turns out that way, sometimes it doesn't. Neverthess, a new dog against a worn gear results in a very small point of contact at the points of the dog/bottom of the gear cavity. They'll wear off quickly.
