I just purchased an 87 baretta 162 w/volvo penta 130 hp 4cyl 275 stern drive. When accelerating quickly the engine bogs down and i can here the carb make a choke/hissing sound. It sound as if the carb may be getting too much fuel too quick. Can I adjust the lean or rich mixture on the carb? If you accelerate slowly the engine just runs fine, and really moves out at top speed at about 4500 rpms. I would like to pull a skier but if i cannot accelerate quickly i will never get them out of the water. I am a 1st time boat owner and i believe i got a steal when i bought this boat.

Sounds like it is time to rebuild the carb. You could also check your carb filter for blockage. But really sounds like a carb issue.

As stated, sounds like a classic accelerator pump issue in the carb.

Do you know the AQ# for your engine? AQ131 perhaps?

On some of the carbs, the accelerator pump is an easy repair.

Re: baretta bog down

Thanks for the input. I Assume the carb has never been re-built. I live in Fairfield Ohio and have three marine dealers within 2 miles of my house, so picking up a carb kit should be no problem. The previous owner also gave me a radiator for the engine, and stated the i do not need to use this part because the motor is water cooled ? I did run the boat pretty hard last weekend and the guage stayed right at 100f, but i do not know if the guage works. Currently there is no a/freeze in the radiator tank on the front of the motor. I have never rebuilt a boat carb, i assume is is practically the same as an automobile carb ? New to this forum, and so far it is awesome!!!

OK you have a heat exchanger(radiator) on the engine and it is empty and you ran it hard. Is that what I read. If so you need to fill it with antifreeze and see where the antifreeze is going. Sounds like the previous owner new the radiator was bad and gave you a new one. Get a manual for your engine and drive and read up on how your cooling system works. As far as the guage reading 100 seems to me it is completely out of antifreeze. Sensor will not read air temp. It has to be submerged in antifreeze or water to make a reading. Find your coolant leak and rebuild carb.

Re: baretta bog down

He gave me the heat exchanger and a couple of gaskets saying that i do not need those items. The heat exchanger is not on the motor, it is in my hand. Was he Lying to me ? I think if i pour water into the radiator compartment w/o the heat exchanger it will just run out ? HELP i do not want to lock up the motor . Thanks P>S> I believe the motor is a aq131a

Sorry im a little confused on what you have for cooling system. Can you post a pic for us to look at. Is it a round cylinder on your engine with a radiator cap. Does it look like the piece he gave you? Sorry for being confused.

I don't have a pic, the boat is docked at rocky fork lake in hillsboro, and i am in fairfield today. The heat exchanger/radiator is rectangular brass and has an inlet and an outlet. The front of the motor has a square front cover with a radiator cap on top in the center like an automobile. Does this help?

Ok thinking mor about it it sounds like maybe he removed the heat exchanger and is using it as a fresh water cooling boat. Have you ever ran this boat in the driveway on muffs?

NEGATIVE, This gentelman i bought it from fixes and repairs boats all the time. I know where he lives and do not see any reason why he would deceive me ? But you never know. He did mention to me that it was water cooled. As i said i ran it last weekend end and didn't see, hear, or smell any sign of overheating. Ist time boat owner but i have been in the automobile business all my life.

Do you have a trailer to bring this thing home and check it out.? I would bring it home and put it on muffs and run it to see if you have water coming out exhaust that means impeller is doing its job. Have you put water in radiator cap to se if it holds?

Re: baretta bog down

Thanks for the volvo europe site. I found my cooling system. It is an aq131a motor. Also checked out the carb, the accelerator pump looks like a breeze to replace.

Re: baretta bog down

I have another question concerning the baretta aq130a. I know the firing order is 1-3-4-2. Is the #1 plug in the front of the motor or the rear. I assume it is in the front ? Toadwarts
