Base Gasket question 67 1100 Merc

Im doing a power head transplant this weekend,and my question is , I need the two gaskets (one under the exhaust plate and one under the powerhead)can I make them from stuff from the auto parts store?I have no way of getting them from any place this weekend and its the only free time I have.<br />Any ideas would be great

hello<br /> trust me, put the project off until you can obtain the proper gaskets and sealants. life will be so much better. I have made many base gaskets for older motors. most take seveal attempts and 4 to 8 hours to get perfect. anything less will most likely fail.<br /> but if you must then remember get the proper thickness materiel and make sure it can take the exhaust temps. good luck and keep posting

TOOMANY: With no regard for all the 'enthusiastic' advice above, that's what I do. I've never had trouble with them. Take an imprint of the cowl face using blue scraping dye or similar material or just light oil. Take special care at the water tell-tale hole. If it's not looking good, scrap it and start another. Patience will get you a good one. ;)
