Is there a way of knowing if I have a good ground and am in base timing mode. I moved the ground from the engine block to the fuel line and seem it get the same result. Is there a better ground? I am working on a 2007 5.0l 220hp.

Thanks, Larry

Merc, Volvo, carbed? EFI?
Since neither Merc nor Volvo go buy year, do you have an engine SN? or full model number?

Head up to the Adults Only sticky at the top of this forum, then go to the service manual link and download manual #31 for your engine.

Re: Base timing mode question...

I have the manual and read it. Question was how do I know it is in base timing mode? If I don't have a good ground what will happen? Also where is a good place to ground to?

Thanks, Larry

How about the negative battery terminal. Use a long jumper if you can't figure out a good clean ground somewhere else on the engine.
With it grounded propely, the timing will not move when you raise the rpms. That is the purpose of base timing. It locks it so it doesn't move unless you turn the distributor.

Just as Don says, when you shine the timing light on the damper pulley, the mark will be there. If you aren't in base timing mode, that mark is either not there, or it seemingly "jumps around" as the light flashes.

Where is the sticky note with the download?
