I recently bought a used 1989 (I think) 20HP Evinrude Model E20CRLCEM Serial #R08154848 long shaft and I'd like some basic information if you can.

I plan using it on a 12ft Carolina Skiff that I am restoring.

I was told when I bought the motor that it had been upgraded to a 25HP, I assume though intake change.

The motor is running fine. It has a few issues. The kill switch does not work so I will replace it and the prop is nicked so that too will be replaced. I plan to replace the water pump, lower unit oil and spark plugs.

What can you guys tell me about this model and year. What should I look for to ensure reliability?

Do you know RPM at WOT? Oil Ratio?

?????

Many Thanks

with a 30hp carb and intake plate you can bump that up to 30hp. Same powerhead, 500+ccs.

That is a great motor assuming it has been taken care of. A thing to check is the compression on the two cylinders. You should be well above 100 psi on both cylinders and most importantly the cylinders should be within 10% or each other in regard to compression. If you have a problem here, you could be in for a major repair.

When you change the lower unit oil, check the condition. It should not be milky and if so that would indicate a leak that would need to be fixed.

That motor should work good on a 12' Carolina Skiff. You should be able to reach speeds of 25 mph. You might want to check the transom on your boat. I thought those boats were 15 inches which would require a short shaft motor.

Long Shaft Verified. Should work fine.

I'm waiting on a manual but I thought I'd drop the lower unit this weekend since its forecast to snow 8" and I need something to do.

What lower unit oil should I use?

Thanks

Welcome to Iboats Larryhorne!

Before you order a kill switch!
A black yellow striped wire that connects to the power pack, has a black insulated connector on it. The wires on each end of that connector are known to loosen up,(even though they look tight) and not make contact. I suspect this may be your kill switch problem. Hope this helps ya

Thanks Cofe I'll check it with the volt-ohm meter but I think the previous owner said that the motor would cut off when he used the throttle which leads me to believe there is a short on the tiller end so he unplugged it at the ground on the power head. I'm not going to pay 100 bucks for the OEM part. I plan to install a push button switch with rubber boot to the engine cover and use it as my kill switch.

Hey Larry, a rubber boot kill switch mounted on the motor would work. But please consider the liabilities of falling over board with the motor running>>>>>/

Yeah, you are right........I did imagine me watching the skiff buzz off into never never land plus I really want to restore this little 20 hp OEM. If replacement isnt too hard I may go with OEM but I was looking at the tiller assembly the other night and I could figure out immediately how to start disassembling it. I just ordered both manuals from Cook so maybe in a week or so I can read up on it.

Thanks for your ping. Well taken.

I know this thread is over 2 yrs old, but I have this exact model of Evinrude and the loose kill switch connection advice saved me a big headache and some money. Thank you, Cofe! It may be an old post, but it is an invaluable one!
