I appreciate this forumn as it has helped with other questions I've had. I plan to rebuild my carbs this fall and after that assume I may have to go through the sync process. The service manual covers the procedure but I was wondering how to go about getting the motor up to 4500 rpms without being in the lake cruising around. I have read about not exceeding 1500 or so on the muffs so what's a fella to do? Thanks for any help. BTW 1981 70HP Johnson

I don't have the manual with me but I believe that was part of the procedure.

Checking max timing is prt of the link & sync procedure but the motor does not have to be running to do it. Re-read that section and it will tell you how to do it.

The basic Link n Sync for my 1986 40hp is done with the motor not running.
Checking the maximum timing is done at a higher rpm and is probably what you are remembering.
There has been a procedure posted on the site about this procedure, but you would have to do some searching to find it. I am pretty sure the poster was Joe Reeves.
After setting my timing as recommended in that thread, I checked it with a timing light I used while hanging over the back of the boat with the motor cover off while my wife drove. I put some white paint on the pointer and the timing mark I wanted to line up on and it worked out fine. It isn't for everyone, but in the case of my 17 mph pontoon boat, it wasn't all that bad. I don't know if I would do it at 30 mph, but I probably am crazy enough that I would. :D
