Sorry, very new to this. I have a 25 hp Mercury 4 stroke (console drive). I am curious about the alarm system for the motor. The motor is a 99 and it's new to me. I've never heard any alarms and didn't actually know if the system is functional. Where is the alarm located on the motor or elsewhere? Does the alarm chirp when when you start the motor or just when something is wrong like high temp or low oil pressure? Thanks.

You should hear a short beep when you turn the ignition to the "ON" setting, prior to starting. If you do not hear this, then there is a problem either with the horn, or the system itself.

Is the horn on the motor itself or a horn for the boat, perhaps on the console? Reason I ask is because I'm chasing a problem where the motor won't crank when it is really hot out, like mid 90's and up. When it cools down in the evening or on cooler days, it cranks and starts no problem.
The boat (15 foot Kalamath) has a horn mounted to the side of the console that the previous owner said didn't work. There's a push button on the console. I assumed this is a horn to alert other boats, but could it also be tied into the motor's alarm system for overheating etc? Probably not related since that would be an awfully loud alarm, but again...I don't know where the alarm is located or is there any way to test it? Obviously mine makes no sound when the key is turned so I can't be sure that it's working.

Ultimately I intend to make sure the alarm is functional but what I really want to know is would an alarm (not heard because the buzzer is not functional) cause a no crank situation. My guess is that it would crank but the ECU would limit the rpm or shut it down if an alarm were triggered.

Thanks
