we had a good time yesterday at stillwater, entered a private bass contast and my fieance(sp)
tied for 3rd place out of 43.(you have to let the women win once in awhile). A cold front went through early and the fishing was kind of slow but we caught 8 total averageing about 15"

Re: bass season opens

well we kind of cheated, we found out where the winner for the last 2 years was fishing and fished next to him.(a good friend and neightbor) and we used live bait, the only rule is longest bass wins. This derby is just a friendly get together with a home made trophy that you keep for the year and give it to next years winner.and one heck of a fish fry at 5 pm. just being lazy at stillwater

Re: bass season opens

Got to love Stillwater....used to go up to a friend's camp up on Soft Maple Resevoir every weekend for 4-wheeling. Stillwater was always a stop to gas up on the way to Bradingham....that is until they outlawed them in the town of Webb(?)(we still sneaked in a few times and got chased out by the ranger).

Never been out on the lake though...well, in a boat anyway. I remember the day like it was yesterday...Myself and a few friends had already scheduled Sept 12th of '01 off to go wheeling starting out in Constableville and on up to Soft Maple. After a solid day and a half of staring at the news on TV we decided to go on up as planned. Stillwater had been drained and we ended up riding the resevoir bottom for a good part of the day (by the looks of all the stumps, I can see why a prop might not last too long). It was beautiful sunny day, deep blue sky without a cloud anywhere....but there was not one white streak accross that blue sky. It was really erie not seeing a single jet streak in the sky that day....

That area from Soft Maple over to Bradingham and on up the Tug Hill seemed like my home away from home as a teenager! Lots of great memories of that area..

Oh...OMC..I wanted to ask if you've fished Oneida Lake? Only about 5 mins from my house, so I'm out there pretty much exclusively these days. I'll have to take a run over to stillwater with the boat if I go up to Soft Maple this summer for sure

I live just down the hill from Brantingham, if you go from c-ville to Brantingham on wheelers or sleds then you go right past my house. I have never fished Oneida Lake, If you click the link in my last post you will see I do not have a boat suitable for waves.I do enjoy fishing for walleyes though so maybe I will try it or the river one calm day. I also want to give Delta lake in Rome a try.

Re: bass season opens

Yeah I've been thinking about shooting up to Delta Lake sometime myself....only seen that on from behind the handlebars of the sportsman too. I hear it can get pretty packed with boats, but good fishing.

Oneida can have it's rough days, that's for sure.
Also, being 26 miles long east to west, it can kick up in a hurry if a storm with some wind blows in (and I'm usually at the east end). It can be like glass or 4-5 foot waves and I've been out there at it's worst in my 14' baby bayliner. You get used to it though...just tilt the motor up a little more than usual, get that bow up and keep it there. (and make sure you have lots of gas lugging like that) I started out running Oneida on a '89 kawasaki stand-up jet ski too (no matter the lake conditions) so I feel VERY comfortable in my toy boat. :D

Here's a couple sites that have lake cams if you ever plan a trip out. They've become really helpful to me...I take a peek before I leave work and plan my afternoon from there!

South shore about midway down the lake:
http://www.lakevision.com/camera_11.htm

Western (Brewerton) shore:
http://www.syracuse.com/oneidalakecam/

Happy fishing!

Re: bass season opens

You are correct,I do believe, the bass fishing season starts after spawning is done or almost done so the fish are not fished off their beds.
