I have a 10" or so diameter trunked Basswood tree.

Is it possible to "top", or say cut off the top six feet or so of the main trunk to prevent further vertical growth?

I believe I have seen trees under power lines that have been topped to prevent them from further growth into the lines.

If this practice is ok, what, if anything, should I treat the fresh cut with? And can I do this procedure at this time of year?

Thanks all,
PC
