I have a 10" or so diameter trunked Basswood tree.

Is it possible to "top", or say cut off the top six feet or so of the main trunk to prevent further vertical growth?

I believe I have seen trees under power lines that have been topped to prevent them from further growth into the lines.

If this practice is ok, what, if anything, should I treat the fresh cut with? And can I do this procedure at this time of year?

Thanks all,
PC

Pat, on some trees you cut off the top and they spread out. They can look kind of goofy with each years new growth. I'd check with a nursery. They should know.

Re: Basswood Tree Topping

Topping a tree is an extreme measure that usually promotes even faster regrowth and an ultimately weaker tree due to poor crown structure. Arborists generally discourage this practice although it was once more common. Utility tree trimmers are only interested in the welfare of the utility lines. Tree trimming wound treatments are even being discouraged these days as the tree has its own defense and healing mechanisms that the dressings can impede. Of course, the manufacturers of the dressings will tell you otherwise. Just make a nice clean cut if you prune and clean your saw or pruner before cutting into a different tree in order to reduce the chances of introducing pathogens. If you want a smaller tree you will have to plant a smaller variety or prune on that larger tree almost every year like a Bonsai! I prefer to prune in late fall or winter as the leaves are off the tree and I can see the structure better, less cleanup too. Also the tree's metabolism is very slow in winter so the tree "bleeds" less and is less likely to contract disease.

Re: Basswood Tree Topping

Thanks for the info guys. Topping this tree is a compromise with my Lovely Bride-Queen tree lover. I would like to simply remove the tree as a whole.......we wil see how it works out.

We have lots of trees, but this one is on the hit list due to potential growth thus blocking our wireless internet dish.

BTW, if I brush against basswood leafes I react similar to poison ivy. No kidding, severe contact results in fluid filled blisters, scabing and so forth. Evil tree that basswood IMO !!!
