Batteries in parallel or not?

I have a smaller cranking battery and also have a deep cell that I use for my radio and trolling motor. As of now I charge them separeatly and have them wired separately. The cranking battery is charged by the engine but the deep cell just discharges and i remove it everytime for charging(heavy). Would connecting them together be a better setup?

No. Not unless you use a dual battery switch, isolator, or ACR and make very long high speed runs. Chances are the alternator on the engine does not have enough output to significantly charge the deep cycle battery in a short run back to the dock or ramp. What you are doing is best for both batteries. Even with a switch, the alternator issue is still an issue. Look at it this way. Your trolling motor probably draws about 40+ amps so if you ran it for only one hour, and your engine alternator had a 20 amp alternator, you would need to run the engine wide open for two hours to replace the current you used. If you simply hardwired the two batteries in parallel you create another problem. When using the trolling motor you also draw off the starting battery. So although time on the water may be extended drawing from both batteries, you also increase the possibility that the engine won't start because you drew down the starting battery too far.

I have a portable battery charger that has settings for small, regular, deep cycle, AGM, etc... It cost me around $60-70 gut is great for charging the boat, car, and lawn mower. It even has a 70 amp starting mode and can check your alternator. I would think that it would be easier to hook one of these up every time than lugging around a deep cycle battery.

Re: Batteries in parallel or not?

Well I live in a townhouse and dont have easy access to my boat thats why im asking because I hate lugging that deep cell in and out of the house. I could run an extension cord out to the boat but I would have to hook the boat up bring it close to the house and then move it when done. I have a 40amp alt but even so I dont think it will be enough. Looks like im stuck with my current setup. I have a battery charger that is similar and also have a jump start box that i carry with me.

Solar charger??? Might work out good for your situation.

Solar charger is not a soultion. They put out so little current you can only rely on them to keep an already charged battery topped off.

you can certainly buy a solar panel that will work but it would cost about $800 and it stands six feet high and is about 24 inches wide. Then you need the charge controller as well.
