Warning: New boat owner here! That said, I'm seeking advice on replacement batteries. Got a 1981 Ranger 188 with a Merc 150 V6 power trim. Hummingbird 'finder. Troll motor. The usual. Don't want to go over the top, but I do want dependable, long-lasting batteries.

Re: Batteries

Buy good quality batteries, do not skimp on price. Delco makes great batteries. So does several other companies.

I have had nothing but success with the newer "OPTIMA" batteries ( the funny looking ones, they look like a six pack ) They are twice the money, but last, well, I'll get back to you on that... If they ever do quit !

Whatever you choose:

DO take good care of them, and they'll last a long time.
DON'T take care of them and they'll last no longer than "cheap" batteries.

Tips to help them last:
Keep them clean, wipe them off from time to time.
Don't leave them discharged for extended periods of time.
Clean the connections frequently ( twice a season )
Keep them cool and dry.

Re: Batteries

I've been hearing a lot of good things about the Optima batteries. Most important to making batteries long is to recharge them within 24 hours of use.

Re: Batteries

Care is more important that the battery itself... Good Luck

Re: Batteries

A heavy duty starting battery is okay for carbed V-6s. For EFIs I'd go for an extra-heavy duty. Actually since you have pumps and electronics, the extra-heavy would be the better choice regardelss. Always keep the connections clean and pliers-tight, Merc voltage regulators like to fry if they aren't. You want 27-series trolling motor batteries. I like Interstate batteries, but there are plenty of good choices.
