Ok, I have a 1986? Evinrude 40hp outboard Model # E40ELCD. I was wondering if it has charging capability to keep my batteries charged while it's running? You can reply here or email at bozzanddww3@yahoo.com. Thnx in advance!!!

Re: Battery charging

When you say batteries, No! it will not keep up if you are running a trolling motor. That is only a 4 amp charging system.

Re: Battery charging

Thnx R. Johnson. Let me be a little more specific and see if this helps. I have 2 batteries wired up from the motor. One is for starting and the other is for accessories (Lights, trolling motor and such). I have a cutoff so that I can unplug the starting battery after I get out there and only use the accessory battery (hopefully to keep from draining the starting battery). Is there enough charge to at least charge the batteries while I am running the motor?

Orrrrrrrrrrrr, is there anything I can do to produce more charging amperage and voltage??

Re: Battery charging

The system will maintain your starting battery. The engine has to be running at full throttle to produce that 4 amps. There is no way that I am aware of to up the charging system.

Re: Battery charging

Ok, Once again I thank you. I wonder if I put a battery isolator in there if it would charge the starting battery and once it had it charged if it would also charge the accessory battery?

Re: Battery charging

Yes it would, but only to a certain degree. If you go to an isolator, get the make, before break type. This will not damage the charging system if you switch over with the engine running.

Re: Battery charging

Thnx R. but I was thinking of the type that you didn't bother with as it let the charge go to both batteries but would not let one drain the other. Current could only flow one way. I'm hoping that if I go out there with a full charge on each battery that the motor will keep them both charged at least while I'm on my way to my fishing spot.

Re: Battery charging

You are correct about one battery not draining the other when using an isolator, (diode).<br />Just keep in mind that when charging the batteries after trolling, the trolling battery will get the vast majority of the available charging current.

Re: Battery charging

Sorry the charging system does not have enough oomph to charge the accessory battery especially if you have a trolling motor. Best bet is to charge them fully from the charger at home before you leave.
