I have 2 deep cycle batteries, I think they are 27's, but for sure 24's by Deko. Anyway, both of them are dead because I am an idiot and left my battery switch on, with the CB, and the radio...it was pouring rain and I was in a hurry lol....anyway, I have an Automatic battery charger on it now, and obviously I can only do one at at time, and my question, how long does it take to charge? I am just below 50% now, charging at 10AMP. 24 hours about right? I am going to leave it on over night, since its an automatic, and hopefully it will be charged by A.M....any thoughts?

Re: battery charging

It may take longer than that since the charge tapers considerably during the last stage. But consider yourself lucky if they didn't go to battery heaven. Batteries don't like being driven to "stone dead".

Re: battery charging

Could be longer . 10amps not alot for two discharged batts. of that size . Got the green eye on top? Caution on leaving batt charger on or near anything that could catch fire or unatended as the amperage might go higher with time . Is it being limited as to the size of your automatic charger ? I have had a pair for years that always get run far down and charge with 30amp charger and damed if that green eyes
a fairly good indication of charge .

Re: battery charging

The batteries could be dead but that would be a costly mistake. But they are taken a charge which is good. Yes the charger has a green light. Ill check in the morning and see if its charged.

Re: battery charging

Also I'm only charging one at a time but they are tied together so I guess they are both charging

Edit*
As of tonight, they are charging still, taking longer then I would think, but 24 hours seems to be right. I have it at 10 Amp, and its an automatic, and it turns off once the batteries are charged. I unplugged them, due to risk of fire, and will plug them back in tomorrow after work.

Re: battery charging

Lost batt charger on tractor that I left Ing on charged overnight .Was glad it was sitting on metal tractor seat
! The Green Eye I was talking about is on my Delco Deep Cycle marine batts. Lead acid batts need high inrush current till resistance /voltage comes up cells equalize and held there .Then current will go down it will take as long as it needs till this happens . If it doesent and stays at to high rate of charge then one cell or all
will boil and by not charging right/enough current will decrease life by sufilde on cell plates . high batt plate surface resistance . Mine are at least 8 yrs old and are hooked up to 600 watt 120v inverter with 75 watt trouble light w/12v bulb . No Not Amish and remember that batts are throw away / scrap lead at about 30 cents a pound .

I did the same thing this past summer (Doh !!!) I left BOTH batteries on for about 3 weeks. I think the depth sounder was left on and maybe a couple of other things.

I bought a group 24 Deko Marine and used that to start the engine. I was able to re-charge the original batteries (about 24 hours) and took them to my local auto parts store to be tested. Surprisingly, they were OK, not perfect, but OK. I kept the better of the 2, but probably will get a new one to match the Deko next season.

I would recommend having the batteries tested once you get them up to full charge, which 24 hours should do it. 48 hours on an automatic should be even better.

Re: battery charging

Load testing will tell Amp/hour capabilites and cranking amps to condition and life . Sold on these batts ,Delco,Trogan , Cost is always the shocker but longevity and trusting /recovery after abusing is what I want !
