Battery difference

Hello,
I ve been pricing batteries to get an idea form the next coming boating season. I found Optima startaing At $160 and a Walmart EverStart for $65. Both have the same CCA and both are deep cycle marine. What's the difference? This year I used the Everstart with no problems. What would I gain with a "better" more expensive battery? Thanks for any input.

As a rule Everstart batteries are not exactly noted for their long life.

Most of the expensive deep cycle batteries are gell electolyte or agm absorbed glass matt electrolyte built with thicker plates, etc which in theory are supposed to last 10 years or so properly mainained...in the long haul they are cheaper than replacing up to two or three times in the same time period.

Properly maintained, a $65 battery will last five years or more. I doubt the high buck batteries go 10 years on average. My batteries for decades have come from my local farm store and they are indeed $65 (starting) and $75 (group 27 deep cycle). My boats are new every five years and the original batteries go with them.

Agreed. I've found Group 31 flooded H-D tractor batteries to be the best bang for the buck.
They have almost 1000 CCA for about 90 bucks, and have a 5 year pro-rated warranty. Just yesterday I exchanged a weak one that was 2 1/2 years old and got a fresh one (with new warranty) for 50 bucks.

For a raceboat or racecar I would use the Optima, only...otherwise I would use the everstart.

I buy mine from Cosco but Walmart also very good.
I have not had a battery that did not last a least 6 years.
My current Deep cycle Delco from Cosco back when they were Price Club is over 10 years old and going strong. However it does not run a trolling motor.
It runs all the electronics and a back up starting battery.

Battery life has more to do with how you care for it than type or brand.
Most batteries do not die they are killed by their owners.
Alway recharge right after use and once a month in summer used or not.
