88 mercruiser 305. Suddenly started draining the battery. If I pull red wire from alt then the drain on stops. Suggestions? The alternator tested fine.

Re: battery drain

How was the alternator tested? It can charge and still have problems.
If it's draining the battery just by being hooked up, it's bad.

Re: battery drain

The alternator is an automotive one that was installed by a PO. For the RECORD, I plan on changing it for next season. It is an Autozone alternator, so I pulled it and had it bench tested. It passed. There is a solenoid near the circuit breaker. Could that be faulty?

Re: battery drain

let me add that I was testing for battery drain, not with an ammeter, but using a test light and a multimeter between the positive wire and the positive terminal. The light would light and the meter would show 13 volts. Strangely, i found that I had continuity between the red positive wire and the negative wire which tells me that something that should be positive is touching something that is negative.
