Battery Ignition (Coil Question)

I had someone come out to the house to look at the boat. He refuses to work on it because it's so old, I have no problem with that, I don't blame him..anyway.

He took at look at the coil and said I have a 6 Volt coil with a resistor and he says I should get a 12 Volt Coil with an Internal resistor and just go right from the juntion box to the + side of the new 12 Volt coil.

The + side of the coil now does go to a ceramic(?) resistor then from there up to the junction box.

I don't really know the guys credentials who looked at it, but just wonder if that sounds right to anyone here?

I am having a problem where after the boat is warmed up, if I try to restart it, I get no spark and the coil is very warm. The man looking at it said if the coil gets warm/hot I will lose spark till it cools down. That sound right?

Thanks!
Carl

Is that that 60 that has been converted that you have been asking about? The guy could be right. But then who knows??? It is not right to begin with.
