87 omc 5.7, I traced the alternator battery wire to a solenoid looking thing towards the stern. from there it heads off to several other large wires, the other large terminal on it has one big red wire on it. How do I hook up the isolator?

I was going to remove the alt batt wire from the solenoid, run it to common on the isolator, then run #1 terminal to the stud I removed the alternator wire from, and run terminal 2 right to battery two

I have no idea why the charging wire would go onto a solenoid though

I have a Mercury. My wiring harness connects the Pos. from battery, Starting solenoid, and charge from rectifier together. I just diconnected the red pos. from the rectifier and ran a new wire to the isolator.

What you want to do is fine, that's the way I did mine, that's the assist solenoid you are talking about and if you continued to trace those wires all the way back they eventually take you right to the battery which is where you want the alt output to go.
