Battery Killer!

My optimax tends to draw down the batteries. I ran it without any other electronics on to help find the problem. Could it be discharging the batteries instead of recharging them? I start off with 13 volts and can only start the engine twice. Thanks for any help.

Re: Battery Killer!

The charging system is apparently not working. Using a voltmeter, measure battery voltage (at the battery) with the engine off. That reading should be 12.6 volts. Start the engine and rev it to about 1500 RPM. The voltage should rise to at least 13.5 volts. If not, the battery is not being charged. Next, have the battery load tested to make sure it is good. Simply recharging it does not mean it can "hold" a charge. Replace it if necessary. Next, disconnect and clean both ends of both battery cables. Make sure they are clean and tight. Now repeat the test. If it still is not charging, you need to diagnose the charging system. A service manual is an essential tool if you plan to work on your engine yourself.

Have you checked the alternator belt to make sure it's tight............ or even on there? I've seen the idler pulley go lock up and take out the belt on several Opti's.
