Can anyone of you guys/gals recomend a good automotive type battery to replace one of my bad battery. Only has 10.2V after overnight charge on automatic mode. I read here that the main difference between car vs marine is that marine has thicker plates to withstand vibration but I gotta believe a car battery also takes alot of vibration in most vechiles on the roads today. Any comments or suggestions appreciated. BTW just running a GPS/Charplotter and the radio so I really don't have alot of dc running.

If you use a car battery don't be surprised if it goes in two or three years.I've had good luck with duralast from Autozone.

That, and the terminals are different. If you have an outboard, the battery cables have ring terminals on the end so you would need to add a post-to-stud adapter to an auto battery. You now just introduced two additional points of failure. Lot's of people use auto batteries and get by. Hit a few waves hard and you'll find the purchase may not have been the best decision. Batteries in cars don't take anywhere near the physical abuse that a boat battery does.

Thanks guys, didn't even think about the terminal, duh! Guess I'll keep my eyes open for a sale at West Marine and just get a boat battery. Great site to keep us rookies in check!! Lots of great help here.

Re: Battery Needed

any place that sells batteries, can get you a marine battery, west marine is one of the most expensive places to buy one, go to Kmart, Walmart. i buy mine directly from battery distributor, here in Jacksonville, about 70% of the store prices, if they go bad, no hassle you get at the store. i'm now using the Barracuda batteries, and very happy.

WalMart. Their batteries are made by Interstate (I think), and they are reportedly good, and cheap. Alot has been said about them here, and although they aren't reds, they seem to be good. I have one, 2.5 yrs old, and still holds it's charge.

Thanks guys, I think I'll do some shopping around today for one. I was lucky before when I needed a battery they were on sale at west marine, just thought they might be better batteries.
