Does you RO take out the sanitizing chemicals of city water "chlorine". if not I don't know for sure but chlorine is very volatile when mixed with other chem. Can even start fires when mixed with common household things "I won't tell as fire marshal will take me away"
I have used well water with no immediate affects. It may add to the sultanate but no change will be seen right away.
As to your question: No distilled water is not equivalent to reverse osmosis. In distilled water: H2O is brought to 212 degrees Fahrenheit under standard conditions at sea level "the boiling point" but not higher as to not boil other contaminates. Other contaminates that boil at lower temp "ie:ethanol @173.3? F" are remove before H2O boils then saturated vapor is condensed back to H2O via evap tubes. RO just filters
