Battery needs water can I use....water from a Reverse Osmosis system or does it have to be distilled?

Depends on how much fluid is gone. Any water will work, but distilled water is best aside from putting acid back in. Many farm supply stores carry bottels of battery acid.

If you are talking about a maintenance free battery a loss of fluid (electrolyte) indicates a problem. Adding water may not help. It may bring back temporary battery life, but you will likely have the same problem again.

motors that use battery as the regulator tend to use water, so some more info is needed like "whats the motor"

The motors are 1995 150 loopers (twins) The batteries are Wally World standard cranking lead acid batteries. They dont need alot of water just a topping off. They dont sit perfectly level and I think they leak out the vents when the boats bouncing around.

Everyone always says use distilled water which I NEVER have any of but I do have a RO system that says it removes just about everything from the water.

Just curious if RO is equivelant to distilled. Dont want to wreck the batteries.

Does you RO take out the sanitizing chemicals of city water "chlorine". if not I don't know for sure but chlorine is very volatile when mixed with other chem. Can even start fires when mixed with common household things "I won't tell as fire marshal will take me away"

I have used well water with no immediate affects. It may add to the sultanate but no change will be seen right away.

As to your question: No distilled water is not equivalent to reverse osmosis. In distilled water: H2O is brought to 212 degrees Fahrenheit under standard conditions at sea level "the boiling point" but not higher as to not boil other contaminates. Other contaminates that boil at lower temp "ie:ethanol @173.3? F" are remove before H2O boils then saturated vapor is condensed back to H2O via evap tubes. RO just filters

Reverse Osmosis removes the minerals, such as calcium carbonate, that can interfere with a battery. I would think it would be OK to use. Certainly it's better than a low electrolyte level in the battery.
