Re: battery not chargin on 150 91 mag 2 xr4

Hi Casey1. I have been having voltage problems with my 1994 200hp. First check all the obvious. Loose, corroded or burnt wires. Take your batteries to an auto parts store and have them load test them. The SELOC manual I have gives a real good check out of the voltage regulators, If yours are bad it will tell you. If you don't have the book, I suggest you get one. All you need is a cheap volt/ohm meter. My problem is intermittant so it is harder to diagnose. If mine would stay broke I could fix it. With no charging at all it could be your Stator, rectifier, or regulator. You need to check them one at a time.

Also, how do you know it is not charging? Do you have a guage on your dash? What is it telling you?

ED

i unhooked cables from the battery and put a voltage meter on them.

did you unhook them while the engine is running? if so, bad, very bad.

all you need to do is place the connections from the volt meter on the battery terminals while its running, and then again when its not running. it should be higher with the motor running of course.

but, if you disconnect them while its running, and lets say that it WAS making voltage, where would this voltage go?

Casey1,

Have everything connected normally. Connect your voltmeter across the battery. Without the motor running the battery should show 12 volts. Start your motor and voltage on the meter should go up 2 to 3 volts and slowly decrease as the battery charges. Some motors the charging circuit won't kick in until you get the motor above a certain RPM.

ED

Casey1

My post is exactly what Myoutboard said and he is right. Never disconnect your battery while it is running. You can damage your charging system.

ED
