I have a merc 1990 40 h.p. Been sitting up for 4 years. Bought a new battery, but it will not charge. Could this be the rectifier? Is this a small 2 inch square box with three wires beside the motor? I need to stop giving the shop $200 or more every visit.

Re: battery not charging

Well, I would opt for the rectifier. I had the same problem. I changed the rectifier and all was good. <br />Happy boating... :D

Sounds like your describing the rectifier. The bridge rectifer is usually the problem. Besides its cheaper and easier to change then the stator and fails more. I'd change it first. It you have a ohmmeter it is easy to check the stator and the rectifier.
