Why not? How can setting a battery on concrete hurt it?

Nate, I've read that it does not matter. Specific reasons were given but I do not remember what they were. Just that they would not discharge sitting on a cold or damp concrete floor.

Dates back to the old days,doesn't matter any more,at least that's what a bat guy told me.

Yup, has to do with how and what they were made of back then.<br />Sorta like my old flash lights that had metal contacts on the charger.. new ones you set in holder and it charges. Who would have Thunk of thet 20 years ago

It had something to do with the insulating qualities of the case. With the new advances in plastic there is no more worries about it. At least that is the info that I have learned about it.

Relegated to the Urban Legend status. I store all my batteries on concrete. I think it actually helps charge em!

it won't hurt the battery. dates way back to when they had wooden cases. One thing is if it does leak it will stain the concrete.

NOT QUITE TRUE!!! Want to see a pic of my basement floor???<br /><br />Went through this earlier in the fall in the I/O forum. Just put a piece of wood under it and you will be set. Or store on a wooden or plastic shelf.

I think it is probably relevant to those areas that freeze in winter, trying to avoid cold temperatures transferring to the battery and reducing the battery's effectveness.<br /><br /> I can remember pouring boiling water over a nearly dead battery and getting enough oomph to get the car started.

Concrete has a neglible R value as an insulator. A simple piece of 3/4" pine or even 1/2" plywood will help. If a battery cell "dies" then there is the chance of freezing so the wood will help prevent this. <br /><br />I always put wood under the battery instead of a plain concrete floor. It tends to get real cold here at times and I don't want to risk it.<br /><br />Bob

Dont know that batteries were ever made of wood..<br /><br />But RUBBER yes...<br /><br />The battery acid would seep through the rubber itself and make a contact with the ground thus draining the battery.<br /><br />Todays batteries are not supposed to leak so storing them on concrete is ok.<br /><br />Mine go right on the concrete

In many cold areas the concrete floor is possibly warmer than the ambient air during much of the winter. So I'm doubt putting the battery on wood does much good. There is no way electrons can jump through the plastic or any other insulative housing to ground. The only possibility of discharge could be due to a conductive path formed by a path of electrolyte from a cell. In an actual vehicle or vessel such a path would also discharge the battery.

We have alot of stray voltage running thru the ground around here. I usually dig a hole behind the garage, place batteries in hole, cover with dirt, and water it down. The batteries draw the stray voltage out of the earth, and they maintain a charge over winter.

The batterys I put on the concrete floor are the dead ones the good ones are on the selves getting charged once a month that concrete floor gets awfull cold up here in the North and it does discharge the batterys down there have checked it so use a block of wood forsure I'm sure you can find a scrap piece

A battery will not lose its state-of-charge strictly from placing it on a concrete surface, but will discharge it over a period of time, due simply to neglect.

dust and moisture, not concrete, will flatten the battery. most of the time your garrage has alot of dust in it, this settles on top of your battery, a bit of moisture mixed in and it will start to conduct.

Urban legend. Does not apply-today.<br /><br />Let me ammend that. When I lived in Minnesota, I always put them on a block of wood. Just because my floor tended to sweat and then freeze. No harm to the batt. But, it made them hard to pry off the floor, if frozen down.

The problem comes from a change in temperature but the concrete, due to it's mass, changes temperature more slowly. This creates condensation on the floor, this condensation (read: water) prevents cool, dry storage for the battery. Put it on a shelf and forget it.
