Battery problem

I have had to replace a dynamic marine battery twice now in two years. The first battery had a stripped thread and the nut would not come off. Dynamic replace it for free in October 2009. Went to autozone to get it charged and tested for new year and it would not hold a charge. Shop guy said he would contact dynamic but it would not be replaced for free. I only go one season out of this battery. I think I'm going to try the Duracraft dual use battery for $85. It has a 3 year warranty.

Re: Battery problem

Are you charging the battery before storage in the fall?? Is the battery left in the boat during storage? If so, the statin memory and clock circuiit in a radio still draws power and will kill the battery over the winter. Leaving a battery in a discharged state will kill it.

Re: Battery problem

Batteries often come with a two tier warranty. Tier one is the time in which they'll replace the battery with a new one and you don't get charged anything. Usually called the "free replacement" period. Could be anywhere between 0 to 3 years, typically maybe a year. After the free replacement period, the next tier of the warranty kicks in, and that's the pro-rated part. Replacement under the pro rated warranty charges you for the time you had the battery. The guy at the shop said they'd not replace for free, did they guy say anything about a pro rated adjustment? You didn't say what the warranty on your battery is. Some really cheap batteries have on warranty at all. And then you'd need to see if there are any other exclusions. Some warranties have so many exclusions they're of little value.

Re: Battery problem

Silvertip - At the end of the season the battery was fully charged and working good. At least my voltmeter on the helm made me think it was. At the end of the year I take the battery out of the boat and store it on my basement workbench. In the spring I take it to autozone to charge it.

Brew - the battery has a one year free replacement which is gone, but unfortunately even though I have had it since 10/09 I only got one year use out of it. Shop said it will probably be a pro-rated warranty. He also said these batteries lasts 3-4 years.

Re: Battery problem

Sounds like just bad luck. Realistically brand doesn't matter much, there are only 3 or 4 companies total manufacturing most batteries with a hundred different names on them. I'd pick up another with a better warranty and try again. I'd also buy a battery charger, taking a battery in to autozone just to get it charged sounds like a big waste of time.
