I need to understand if the boat is supposed to have a generator or alternator on it to charge the battery. The motor looks as if it might have a space opposite the starter, but there is no alternator or any cabling,

Your location ?----What is the model # of it.----Sounds like a 66 model.-----The electric shift model has a battery charging stator.----And no it does not look like a typical automotive alternator.

Model plate and other pics. Some in this forum had given me year information. I Ordered a manual for a 1970 series 80HP motor. Will receive next week. Thanks in advance!

The 2 yellow wires ( not connected ) from under the flywheel are from the stator to charge the battery.----Likely the rectifier is missing or damaged as well.----The block is a common design and some earlier models used a belt driven GENERATOR to charge a battery.---Mounted where you suspect something is missing.------Generator is not used on your model.

The 80 hp was made in 66 and 67
In 66 the Electric Shift model had a regulated 20 Amp Alt, the Mechanical Shift had a Belt driven Generator offered as a Dealer installed Option
In 67, the Electric Shift had the 20 Amp regulated Alt, while the Mechanical Shift now came with an unregulated 6 Amp Alt.
Model # checks out as a 67

I am curious as to what service manual you will receive. in 1969 the V4s became very different motors, inside and out

Now that I take a second look, it is for a V6

Electric Start. An Electric Shift model would have Electramatic in that location

Very little, if anything, in that Manual will be of much, if any use to you. Totally different Carbs, Ignition Systems, Midsections, Lower units, even Throttle Linkages. In 3 words, totally different engines

FWIW, the V6s didn't arrive until the mid 70s

Do a complete evaluation of this motor before you spend any beer tokens on a wiring harness or control box.-----Many inspections can be done on a motor that is not running at this time !!!------Also do a complete inspection of the boat !!

Keep in mind it is a 55 year old motor, and even after any repair/parts replacement, it is still a 55 year old motor.
Have you checked to see if there is Oil and/or Water in the Gearcase?
At minimum, it is going to need a new Water Pump impeller, New Gear Oil, Carb overhaul, and Ignition Inspection. It has a Battery Ignition,

Have to ask------Are you a novice boater.------Is this a Pandemic special?-----Lots of junk boats and motors have been adopted by eager buyers in the last 2 years.

I am a novice boater . I am 16 years old and my dad and I have done about 5 or 6 frame up car restores ( a couple of Bricklins, a couple of Escorts, a 49 Chevy pickup, etc. ) and 20 or so engine overhauls. Dad - and his dad - restored a very old wooden Trojan cabin cruiser in the 60s and 70s. He had a IMP cruiser for a few years 20 years ago. Age doesn't worry me. Dad drives a 30 year old Town and Country as his daily driver. It looks better than my mothers 2014 T&C!
This started as a fishing boat project. We are beginning to conclude this may have been a bad investment of my 200 dollars. May sell the trailer for 50 bucks and let the project go with it. Be more careful on the search for a replacement.
Tearing into the motor today to find out what is limiting it spinning. Taking a look at oil and water in the motor/gearbox. I think we can rehab it, but we'll see.....

Even at 16 years old, you (and dad) have a lot more experience with restorations than the rest of us. Certainly, you don't need our advice as to what you are getting into with this one. It does sound like you have your impulses under control. But don't hesitate to ask.
