Battery Shut Off

My 1986 Ranger 373V has 2 sets of 2 push button switches that disconnect the batteries. 1 set turns off the accessories, such as the radio with one button and the boats ignition with the other button. The 2nd set turns off one of my two trolling motor batteries with one switch and the 2nd trolling motor battery with the other switch.

My question is, these seem to be wearing out and I'd like to replace them. What do I need? Are these just simply battery disconnects or are they circuit breakers as well?

It seems all I find are switches that turn on/off or switch from battery 1 or 2. What do I need?

Didn't think of that, thanks!

I just called them and they were only able to tell me they were circuit breakers, but unable to convincingly tell me how many amps they should each be, but said they should be labled on the body of the breaker, so I guess I'll pull them out and look.

They want roughly $20 per breaker and I need 4. Is there any reason I can't use the ones listed here?

Are any of those to shy away from, as in is one brand better than another?

Re: Battery Shut Off

All but about three of those breakers in your link cannot be turned OFF manually, but they can be turned back on but only after they've been tripped. We have no idea what kind of circuit breaker you have so a picture would help. Only breakers that can be turned both ON and OFF can be used in your application. I also find it odd that they would run that heavy gauge wire to the dash and then to the front of the boat. I assume the breakers you are talking about are actually on the console. I'm just not sure what you are describing is actually what you have. Pictures (front and rear would help).

I'll get a picture. The boat isn't at my house right now, because I'm having a new drive poured, so as soon as I can get over and get picture I'll post it.

The ones I have can be turned off manually, so that is what I want to go with. That way, I can ensure I don't leave something on accidently and drain a battery. The ones I have look a lot like this http://www.iboats.com/Push_Button_R...12686957--**********.260827195--view_id.39683 , with the exception of accepting a ring terminal directly from the battery and the button's are white/ceramic(?).

They aren't console mounted, they are mounted in the battery compartment, with at most 2' of cable directly from the battery. The accessories are then fed from them.

Again, I'll post a pic as soon as I can. Last time out, I couldn't get one of these set, so I couldn't run my troller motor, because it was obviously for the main troller battery. Probably just a matter of time, beforre the one controlling my main electrics goes bad.

Re: Battery Shut Off

The breakers you show are push to RESET only. Pushing the button does not turn them off. With that type of breaker, a short circuit or other circuit problem trips the breaker. When the problem is fixed to you push the button to reset the breaker. Are you absolutely certain the breakers you have actually turn things off when you push the button?

I am 100% certain that things turn off when I push the button. When they are pushed the only thing that works is the tilt/trim.

Again, they just look similar to what I showed, they are not exact, just close in appearance. Mine are obviously about 20 years old and mine take a ring connecter, not a spade connector.

Re: Battery Shut Off

Ok, I finally remembered to take some pictures.

I am needing two of these and both of them are hard to reset. I don't think they are tripping, as in a short/long, because even with the battery unhooked, I have trouble getting them to set.

Well, when I resized the pictures they came out too small. I'll try to enlarge and get a bigger one posted, but the writing on the body says:
38A
45-700-SIO-DD
4643
28V DC 250V AC
E-T-A

Should be able to get some info here:

You will need to do some measuring to make sure the threaded portion is long enough for your mounting application.

This is a push on/ push off breaker

Re: Battery Shut Off

Brian If you can find a fuse supplier that deals only or mostly in fuses and show them what you need they will have all the ETA catalogs and can most likely be able to get them for you

Re: Battery Shut Off

Take the breaker and/or part number to any electronics wholesaler in any medium size city (check yellow pages). They may not sell to a private party but they will provide you with an equivalent part and a supplier in your area. Or have a friend with a business buy it for you. Plug the numbers into the search box on e-bay or Google and see what comes up.

Re: Battery Shut Off

Well, E-T-A was pretty helpful, I didn't realize that was the company name. Thanks!!

The gave me a new part # for my old part, now it's just a matter of tracking someone down that has the part.

My other thought was just to buy an on/off toggle and a 38a circuit breaker and just wire them together in-line. I just hate having any extra connections.

I might try ranger again on this, but they were very pricy. I did find another brand that offers this in a toggle version, but it's only a 35a. Not sure if that would be a problem or not. Mine are 38a.

Thanks for all the help!
