Follow the lead from the starter solenoid back to the boat. That's your positive lead.

The positive lead goes from the battery to the starter solenoid and then to the starter. The neg. lead grounds on the engine. I would try removing and cleaning all pos. wiring connections and the ground connection too with a wire brush. You could also possibly have a bad ignition switch.

I tried that but the battery gives off a spark...does that mean that maybe I wired something else wrong....

Re: Battery to engine

Accessories (radio with a clock and memory function, etc) that draw a small amount of current will cause a slight spark. If its a rather large zap you see, yes -- you have something wrong. Make sure the positive battery cable connects to the large post on the starter solenoid (not the starter). The other large post on the solenoid goes to the starter. The negative cable simply bolts to the engine block. You might try disabling all of the accessories on the boat by removing their fuses. If you still get a spark, something else is wrong.

Who better to answer this thread then upinsmoke. Sorry and nothing personal intended but a sparking outboard engine with upinsmoke replying makes me laugh.

I seem to remember reading somewhere in this forum that you're not supposed to connect anything to the engine circuit. Accessories should have their own leads from the battery.

No problem Eurolarva, I chose that name for the very reason you commented. You got a suggestion and a laugh -- all for free. I suppose I could have used a name like "NoBlownFuses" or something similar but that's not nearly as fun as "Upinsmoke". Besides, there's nary a person on this board that hasn't let smoke escape from a wire at one time or another. If you haven't blown a fuse or made smoke, you haven't done any electrical work. Stuff happens.

Eurolarva, where are you in Minnesota. I hang out in Owatonna (Cabelas is my second home).

You'll have a Cabelas up that way in the near future (out I-94 towards Rogers as I remember). I moved down here two years ago this month so I'm still trying to figure out the lakes. Most of my real serious fishing is done in Wisconsin (are you there Roscoe???)
