I need a new starting battery. Starting a 50 hp 4str. honda. Old batt. lasted 4 years, marine 785/ca,102min.reserve. This was a 1 batt. boat set up. it runs nav. lts., auto bilge, areator, gps&ff. I added a troll bat. up front. I did a research here but would still like some opinions. What would be a better up grade? Marine dual, or marine cranking with the highest cca I can find? Thanks

Re: Battery upgrade

If you're going to be running a trolling motor on it than it has to be a dual or a two batt setup (ie, start plus deepcycle). Don't run a trolling motor on a starting battery unless you can afford to replace them often.

Re: Battery upgrade

The front battery is isolated from starting bat. its a deep cycle and just used for troll motor. Since I added a few more things to boats starting bat. I was wondering if dual would be better than starting bat. for the replacement. I do like to run at night using elec. troll motor. with all other accessories running on starting bat. w/o engine running. Thanks RF

Re: Battery upgrade

Go for the dual if you want to power all the accessories at night. The starting bat would handle it for a while but eventually they would take their toll. If you were running your gas motor it wouldn't be an issue, but since you're on the troll and running the accessories the dual is better.

Thanks RF. Was leaning that way but needed some more input. Found alot of info.on batteries doing a search. I know some people use a deep cycle for their starting, but I think its the cranking power I need with a little help for the accessories. Sounds like a plan, thanks again.
