Re: Bayliner 1700 LS 1997 restoration

My plan now is to remove transom first, then glass it using epoxy. Then I'll remove stringers and then glass them using epoxy. After that floor would be done using poly, while gluing it to stringers with maybe epoxy and stainless steel screws. Does that sound like a good plan.

exp2000,
You can use epoxy a lot of folks do.
I just think for the money Poly works fine. I can put in a lot of glass for the money you will spend on epoxy.
Once again that's a matter of choice.
Good luck and keep the pic's coming.

Re: Bayliner 1700 LS 1997 restoration

It's been a while since I posted anything in this thread, the progress was good, I got stringers and transom out, almost done with grinding, and than when I was almost done with cutting the wood out, I saw a little piece that needed to be just "touched" and guess what; the angle grinder just flew out of my hands, hit the hull on the other side of the boat, and then hit me in my left leg and cut me so bad, I ended up in a ER. Now I have muscle on the left leg, below knee, cut lengthwise about 8 inches, almost all the way to the bone. I have 5 stiches inside the musle and 16 on the outside. I'll post pictures of the contraption that did that. Hint: I had a 3.5 inches blade with a big teeth on the grinder.

OUCH! Sounds like that hurt. Hope you recover quickly.
I actually considered trying the blade from my flush cut saw on a grinder, but the arbor was the wrong size. I guess it is a good thing I didn't. The flush cut saw is a lot slower and lower power, so it is easier to control.

Yeah, those blades on a grinder just look like an ERO trip waiting to happen. I'd rather change out a dozen cut off wheels and waste that time than chance it. Although I bet those blades do make a quick job of things, maybe if I am really careful? </famous last words>

Weird enough it did not hurt as much as it burned. I think I got a nerve bruised, so it was burning, like somebody put a hot iron on my leg; there was very little blood though. I am already walking, but it is still hurting. If it was 6 inches to the right it would have cut my spine.

Demo almost done. Here are some pics. I am about to order supplies. I wonder if there is any difference between tape and cloth, or can I just cut 6" wide strips from cloth instead of buying the pre-cut tape. I expect there could be some money saving there?

Re: Bayliner 1700 LS 1997 restoration

Thanks guys for your support. ER bill so far $2400, more than a boat itself . Oh well, s... happens. Now my only headache is ordering the supplies and getting everything right. So here is what I have in mind, please help me out. I am doing all with epoxy. Deck will be epoxied both sides, 6 oz mat on top only.

Stringers
20 ft total * 2 layers * 6" biaxial 12 oz no mat for tabbing * 2 sides
20 ft * 1 layer * 6 biaxial DB1700 (no mat, 17 oz) for over the top of the stringer

Question: Should I do it other way around, 17 oz for tabbing and then 12 over the top

Frames
340" total length * 6" * 2 layers with 12 oz biaxial without mat

Question: Are 2 layers needed for frames?

Transom
100" around the perimeter * 6" biaxial 12 oz no mat for tabbing * 2 layers
3 layers with DB1700 17oz biaxial for inner skin

Question: I am planning on going about 9" too hull with this inner skin. Is that too much, too little?

Gas tank base
200" * 4" tape, 12 oz * 1 layer
1 layer of skin with 12 oz

Seats
220" * 4" * 6oz tabbing for seat bases

Deck tabbing
510" *4" * 6oz

Deck mat
14' * 85" with 6oz plain cloth

Great progress! sorry to hear about your accident. I hit my leg with the cutoff wheel and that was bad enough....

Keep up the good work! You'll be on the water before you know it.

exp2000,
It looks like you did a super job on the demo, The hull looks nice and clean.
Tough luck on the leg. We always have to stay aware of things, it only takes milliseconds to hurt yourself. I hope you heal quick.
Good luck

Re: Bayliner 1700 LS 1997 restoration

Thanks for all kind words. Well I am determined to finish it up before end of May, no matter what. I am preparing the stringers, while awaiting epoxy delivery from Raka. Here is how I did it. I cut the stringers to 9.5 inches height (originals were 6.5") which would give me some room for mistakes. I then "tied" them together with some temporary support, making sure that the spacing was same.

I then looked for the point the had the most space between the hull and the stringer, and then moved my pencil little bit higher, marked is on the piece of plywood that will be used for tracing. I then cut out enough too be able to place the pencil in.

I then traced it on the stringer. Here is the result.

I forgot to order fibeglass rollers. Anybody has any suggestion what size will I need. Would 1/2 * 3 be good? Do I need more than one size. Please chime in.

Got transom in, 2 plys @ 3/4'' + 1 @ 1/2''. Pre-epoxies each piece first, then sanded then glued them with expoxy again. Pre-drilled larger holes for bolts and refiled with peanut butter.

Glassed the transom in with 6 layers of 1708 without mat. Hand no bubbles whatsoever, used Raka's 350 no blush hardner.

Re: Bayliner 1700 LS 1997 restoration

Getting stringers ready for tabbing. I pre-epoxied them before tabing. Had to extend them to a 11 ft, so I just place 2 pieces over each other, and than cut a "<" with jig saw and than glued them with epoxy

Original stringers were double the width (2@3/4") in the gas tank and bilge area, so here I glued this pieces together with epoxy (re-sanded both before gluing together).

Great work so far! I would tab them into each other with a few layers of glass.
