I recently bought a 2004 Bayliner 185 with the 4.3L engine. Since its winter here in NJ, I couldn't do an in-water test on the boat. Since its a bayliner the price was definately right. I would like any feed back on this model, both pros and cons.
The boat was a leftover, not used.

Thanks in advance

Nice boat!...the 4.3 will give you plenty of power. Its not realy fair to compare it to any other models though. People usualy have strong opinions on bayliner here, and there not all good. I owned one for 11 years, that was suposed to be from the bad years. I enjoyed for 11 years, with no serious problem (other than fastners popping out). What I will suggest is to properly maintain it.If your not sure what to do post on the forum.Any boat will wear out in a hurry if you don't take care of it. Spend the time to take care of it and it will last a long time. First thing to do is keep it covered, keep the bilge dry, and if you boat in salt water flush the engine with fresh water after every use if possible. And take a boating course if your new to boating.

Welcome to the forum

Jim

I agree with cuzner. Take care of it, and it should be fine. Trailer Boats did a review of the latest model, and was favorable. And that was with 3.0L engine. They did recommend the V6 for watersports. Also, from other posts from owners of this boat/engine combo, expect to have top speed in the 50's, with the right water conditions.

Now, if you are venturing off-shore vs inland lakes and bays, it might be on the small side and a bowrider can be a challenge in rough water.

185 Bayliner with the base (carb) I/O will break fifty miles per hour almost any day, maybe even higher with a light load. Some have speedometers that read up in the mid-fifty range.

Lake use or Bay/Ocean?

This will be my third boat, but first I/O. I will be using it in salt-water, barnegat bay and on calm days in the atlantic. I will be keeping it in the water. Any tips on how to keep it in good condition (while) in the salt water all summer? I have had the bottom painted, and will purchase a mooring cover.
The salesman did say the boat should do about 50. should be good for skiing and tubing.
Thanks for all the info.
John M

I bought a Bayliner 205 with a 5.0 last year. The boat has performed great. No complaints. My dealer is one of the best. The 185 with a 4.3 was my first choice but I went with the 205 because of passenger load.

I use the boat down the Jersey shore several times a year. When down the shore, I mainly boat Ocean City south to Avalon. I installed a MST Guardian engine flush kit. If you are keeping your boat in salt water, you can use the MST Guardian to flush the engine while the boat is still in the water. IMHO, it's not cheap and there are many low cost alternatives but it's well worth it for salt-water boaters.
