Bayliner 2160 Value

I was wondering if I could get all of your opinions on a boat that I'm really interested in. It is a 1986 bayliner trophy 2160 hardtop. The motor is a 4 cylinder volvo and I'm not sure what the outdrive is. It has trim tabs as well. The boat has been stored indoors and never left in the water. It appears to be in really good shape. I've done some research and found that the 4 cylinder is very underpowered and it will at best get 25-30mph, but with great gph. I'm ok with that as I may repower to something larger in the future and be staying in the bays and canal. I will also be keeping my other boat. More looking for something to hangout on that we can crash overnight in if need be. I like the layout of the boat and the hardtop. That being said the owner is asking 4500 for the boat and a duel axle galvanized trailer. I'm wondering if that is a fair price for it. Btw it is the middle of winter in upstate ny so I'm guessing that should sway the price, but if maybe that is a decent price for the boating season also. I don't to fall in love with the thing then pay way too much. Thanks any input would be appreciated.

Comes in at $2500 on NADAguides (w/ trailer)

Better than average condition . . . so maybe $2750 - $3000.

Thanks for the reply I saw that on NADA, if you choose the option for hardtop it does bump the price like 800 dollars though. Or because it was standard equipment it is already figured into the price? And would you pay full value in the off boating season?

Low ball him and you might not get . Easy to fall for first nice one that comes along and pay asking price .Feel him out as he has already had offers and waiting for first with cash down and money when comming to pick-up .Alot of wish haves and lookers without financing.
Looks like nice cared for boat but take some experianced boat repair guy that knows what to look at and try engine and outdrive or water test but offer for expences for lake trail or boating fun / headache . I like the looks /trophy's and consider what you need to tow this with as you wiil need ,but save in gas with that engine.

Yea, judgement call as to what it is worth to you. If the hardtop is an 'option', then you could rationalize $3,500. The asking price is a way stretch IMHO.

I would print a copy of the NADA page and take it with to show the guy what his boat is worth in the real world. Sometimes they need a wake up call. I know that I'm shocked when I look up the value of mine.

The hard top is not an option. It's the model of the boat. All 2160's had a hard top.

Being from SoCal I'm clueless on upstate NY so does that mean the boat does not need/get winterized or by being stored indoors it is in a climate controller area thus not needing to be winterized?

I ask that as it seems if it is "ready to run" then you are in an idea position to get a hull surveyor out there and have that verified as even though it might look great, you want a pro to validate the transom and stringers are strong along with a engine/drive mechanical inspection. This assumes you want to spend a little money to have those done unless you just want to gamble on all being OK or you have the experience yourself to perform them.

So I personally would not even bother with trying to show the owner what NADA says but instead, even if you don't want to pay for inspections, ask him if he's ok for you to have the inspections done and if he at all hesitates, then time to move on. That to me says he doesn't want someone poking around the boat.

If he agrees to you having those inspections done, and this is a model boat you really, really want then then I personally would not try and low-ball him as over the course of a few seasons, $500 is not that much for a boat you really want. Just offer $4k and have fun.

Side note: when I had my Maxum up for sale, only 1 perspective buyer asked about getting inspections done and I told him no problem but I wanted to be there at the shop he choose so I could verify what they were doing and didn't break something along the way.
