Bayliner 3288 Hurth 630-a Gears

I Am Just Looking At Purchasing A 1990 3288 The Gears On The Port Side Make A Horrible Sound At Low Idle 700 Rpm It Goes Away. The Mech That Did Insp Says This Is Normal. Any Thoughts

Let's see here. The gearbox sounds like crap on one side but the other sounds fine. I think you already know the answer to that. Find a new mechanic. :eek:
In all seriousness though - some of the larger gearboxes will have some low speed rumble to them.
I'm thinking you should carry this question to your mechanic and ask him if he would warranty it? Of course he's going to say 'no' but at least voice your concern.
As long as the noise goes away when placed in gear it might just be the damper plate. If yours has the spring type there are aftermarket rubber one's that usually cure the noise. I can only speak for the gas motors - the diesels might be different - but I think they are both the same.
