Hello, I.m trying to repair an 85 bayliner capri, the floor is very rotten, the spray foam is waterlogged. my question to anyone that could help; is the spray foam between the plywood floor & fiberglass hull structural or just for bouyancy. thanks, Ralph.

Mostly just bouyancy, but it does provide a little sound deadening as well.

thanks the centre where the fuel tank is does not have foam so I don't think I will put it back in. man was it waterlogged!

I have a 87 capri it is a 305 chevy inboard. Mine was put back together without the foam. I used 3/4 inch plywood glassed on both sides to seal it up. Boat was great last year. I have a oil leak to fix but to answer your question no you do not have to use the foam in a bayliner. I would double check that transome as everyone I have seen it rotten. Get some pics up and welcome we love projects and I love bayliners. So get a move on man.

Good thing I am a bayliner junky and I need a fresh fix. You wont be sorry the capri is one of the best riding boats I have ever been in.

the bilge liners use foam for hull rigidity.

did you reinforce the hull at all?

im about to rip and strip my 89 crapy.
and im afraid of the thin glass hull.....i want to use the foam junk just to reinforce the sides of the water line.

have you seen any crazing on yours yet?,,,,
are you pounding your hull or just on calm lakes?

i would not do a b-liner without foam.....but you did....so i just wanna know your evaluation of the durability of the hull stregnth.

mine is so weak i can feel the water lapping against the side of the hull on a calm day

Hey im not computer savy, still getting pics from camera to this thread but for now, dude I know what your saying about thin hull. got all the seat wood out all the floor and just my luck, the 3 feet of rear stringer wher they were glassed over into the bilge area I think pros call it is now rotten. Want to GIVE up, don't have time for this, but also don't want to do it twice. sorry Ive been offline a while. farming takes precedence, plus work, plus family anyone have any spare time haaa. thanks all later, Ralph

Put the foam back in.
The boat came from the factory with it for a reason.
Structural, sound, flotation, Coast GUard required under 17' i beleive that can surely be double checked (i read it someplace in here im sure)
If the boat manufacturer could have gotten away without it, i assure you they would, it will cost like $50 to $100 buck for you're size boat, and it will give you peace of mind, (priceless) when its done you did it right

I beat the crap out of it last year. Had the boat up out of the water on several occasions. Not on purpose just hauling chop and hit to much wave. Not a single problem. Waxing my hull as we speak. bottom done. This boat was in the water every other weekend for 6 to 8 hrs and stayed in for 3 weeks. The hour meter said we put 50 hrs on her. The boat will run 50 to 55 in choppy water and 60 on glass smooth. This was gps on my phone. I do have a cuddy but don't see where that makes a huge difference. The hull is thicker on it than it is on my 1975 sidewinder which is powered with a 455 and a jet I have owned this one since the 80s and it never had foam.. I didn't beat on it all year but it has been laid up on its side in a turn where the throttle was dropped. I cruise it some and lake blasted a lot. Its been a great boat and will not even think about putting that foam back in it. I did use 3/4 inch for flooring that might have braced it some.

alright !!! now convinced, since I won,t be bashing the boat anyway & I found a dealer of second grade fibercoated 3/4 plywood {like the stuff on a semi truck van trailer side} and I can get it in 9x40ft or any size so one piece no seems & were off. 3$ a square quite reasonable & the foam is gone. for the little amount that was there not worth it but going to add a layer of csm or matt to replace foamed area. I found a boat repair shop up here Bayfield, Ontario that will sell fiber by the yard & resin in 5 gallon buckets. my weekend is full, later Ralph.

Found this info in another forum. you might be interesed.

"Federal law requires all boats under the length of 20 feet to be equipped with floatation. The only exceptions to that rule are kayaks, canoes, inflatable, submersibles, surface effect vessels, amphibious vessels, and race boats. If you are really bored and like to read technical information you can find the requirements in 33 CFR 183 Subpart F."

As I read this it is for new construction in 2004. Older boats will be grandfathered in. My boat is not for sale so I have no worries about liability What I do know for a fact is my sidewinder has sat uncovered for 15 years with a poly coated bottom and a poly/fiber coating on top and you can jump anywhere on the floor with no softness. I put the bayliner down the same way and if she lasts 15 years and is in the same shape Ill not cry about trying it for 15 more.

hey folks, couldn't sleep at nite so went back to the marina & bought the two part single cell foam, for my three kids will be in the boat. drilled 3" holes & filled her up with foam. actually quite easy to use other than drilling that brand new sealed floor. I resin & glassed the hole saw plugs back in. a little sanding & im only a day or two behind. I cant figure out how to get my boat pics on here. still trying thanks for all the tips & help. p.s. after the glassn, I sealed my floor with spray in bedliner for pickups since its more fishin boat anyway. this web site sure gave me the knowledge and or the guts to dive in thanks all RAlph.

as far as the foam........the law IS for new manufacturers....not restorers. its your boat.....you can do what ever you want with it.

We also have an '85 Capri (1600) in need of floor replacement. It was garage kept by original owner but the guy we bought it from kept in in his yard - used it twice in two years! The floor was a little soft when we bought it two years ago, but otherwise the boat was in great shape! This past winter our cover split from a heavy snow load and the snow piled in. Now the floor is really unsafe and we need to work on that for our winter project. Will have to move some equipment around to get it into the garage to work on.

My questions to you all are:

1. I had a local lumber company suggest 1" PVC board (4x8 sheets) for the flooring instead of plywood. Has anybody used this and why or why not? The guy said he has sold it to several people for just such an application.

2. How hard is this job really, and can you work around the seat boxes or do they need to come out? The framework that we can see under the plywood from the ski locker appears to be sound.

My husband and I are pretty handy, both being in construction trades, but we havent worked on a boat before....

I think you would have a hard time getting anything to stick to PVC it works great in tin boats where it is held in with screws but not so good when you have to bond it down. This is been my experience maybe someone else will chime in.

Good point! We will have to read several of the threads we have found to research some more before we get into this. May be more than we want to tackle....
