Did a rough cut out of my floor today. The area just in front of the rear bench was a total mess and the area between the pass seat and the gunwales was pretty well rotted. The front area and driver chair area were fine. Someone had already been in this thing once and really did a jack-leg job. Basically the rear gas tank was holding up the bench and area just in front of the bench. they had stacked several large 2x lumber between the tank and the floor. My stringers actually look okay and the previous person had removed all the insulation and i guess used some sort of spray in foam (like "Great Stuff"?) So now to my questions. 1. I did a rough cut and got about an inch from the sides near the pass gunwale, but there is still some wood rot in that last inch to the edge of the boat. How do i get in that close. I am using a skill saw and a 4.5" grinder? 2. On top of the gas tank were two 1x4 pieces of lumber that went from side to side. The were glassed in and looked factory. What purpose do they serve? they were not positioned to hold the floor above it up. 3. When it comes time to put in my new pieces, does anything have to support the edges where the new and old meet? 4. Lastly, what is recommended for making a template? I will probably install a few smaller pieces of wood rather than 1 large piece just to make it easier to work with but I dont know how i'm gonna get the best shape yet.

Thanks for your help.

Pictures of the areas will help the answers you receive. All the rot must be removed. I just grove the top of mine and pop it up to get to the sides. I support edges of a repair with a scarf joint or a lap joint. I used cardboard to make templates.

hi bob.....welcome to iboats.

the 2x4's are not factory.

in the bilgeliners there were recess cuts in the stringers that allowed another piece of plywood to go over the tank. then another piece (the deck to go over that.

dont use many peices of wood.......but rather as little big pieces as you can to do the boat.......little peices mean lots of un even joint areas in the deck......it will look like a hack job....even with a rug over it. !

the rotten edge on the deck is removed by a sawzall.....or ground off......make careful note of the deck height....

you do not need any structural support at the hull deck joint. (iboaters.,...dont panic....wait for it !)

after the deck is screwed down.......there will be a gap between the hull and the deck.......this is filled with peanut butter.......then tabbed to the side of the hull with glass tabbing.

see the whiteish gook on the edge?.....this is the peanut butter

this is the tabbing that glasses the deck to the side of the hull

click the link in my sig.........and look at the index.....it will show you how to build your deck and gellcoat it in.

Sounds like my next step then is to remove the gunwales to get closer access to the sides of the boat. How are those things held on? I cant really get a sawsall that close to the edge of the boat without the end of the blade hitting something.

Once I get the gunwales removed I'll clean everything up and take some pictures. Since the fuel tank area was so hacked up...I'm sure I'll need some assistance to get it back together properly. It looks like someone had put two 1x4's across the top of the tank and glassed them into the sides of the stringers, then they put a piece of plywood on top of that which covered a fuel line, and then the floor went on top of that.

I only have saturdays to work on it, so it may be a few weeks. Thanks for the help so far.

You should post some pics now, so we can see what you are working with and give you the correct course of action. It will help ensure you do things in the most effecient way and maybe help stop mistakes before they happen. There's a link in my signature that will help you post your pics.

the sawzall will be the tool for the job.......yes the tip will hit.......but just grind out a little area so you can get the blade to run along side the hull.....and start cutting...you will feel when the tip of the blade hits something. ....but there is not much to hit.....just run a short blade around the edge of the deck.....you will feel progress....if you run into an area where the progress gets slo or hard to cut thru ....stop.....and bring out the grinder......grind the top of the deck away till you see why. then continue cutting.

dont worry if you cut into the hull.....its an easy fix.

I'll try and get it vacuumed out this weekend. Right now its such a mess you can't even tell what you are looking at.

Any tips though for removing the gunwales? I honestly haven't looked at them, may be an easy job to remove them.
