Did a rough cut out of my floor today. The area just in front of the rear bench was a total mess and the area between the pass seat and the gunwales was pretty well rotted. The front area and driver chair area were fine. Someone had already been in this thing once and really did a jack-leg job. Basically the rear gas tank was holding up the bench and area just in front of the bench. they had stacked several large 2x lumber between the tank and the floor. My stringers actually look okay and the previous person had removed all the insulation and i guess used some sort of spray in foam (like "Great Stuff"?) So now to my questions. 1. I did a rough cut and got about an inch from the sides near the pass gunwale, but there is still some wood rot in that last inch to the edge of the boat. How do i get in that close. I am using a skill saw and a 4.5" grinder? 2. On top of the gas tank were two 1x4 pieces of lumber that went from side to side. The were glassed in and looked factory. What purpose do they serve? they were not positioned to hold the floor above it up. 3. When it comes time to put in my new pieces, does anything have to support the edges where the new and old meet? 4. Lastly, what is recommended for making a template? I will probably install a few smaller pieces of wood rather than 1 large piece just to make it easier to work with but I dont know how i'm gonna get the best shape yet.
