How complicated is wiring in an older Bayliner Ciera? It's not fuel injected or anything. I've been looking at one but it has an electrical problem. The guy said it was on the water 3 weeks ago and now the starter's not turning over and he doesn't want to mess with it. He thinks it's the ignition switch but obviously electrical problems are no fun. It could be the emergency shutoff switch, a fuse, short, the starter, etc. I'm fairly handy electrically but I don't want to be buying this boat and never be able to figure it out. The guy had his car blow up and needs money so it's a steal. In fact, when I talked to him I asked why it was priced so low and he said he just needs the money. When I look at the boat I will be going over it with a fine tooth comb but even if the motor is blown it is worth more than he's asking. I just don't want to be chasing an electrical nightmare.

If it was on the water 3 weeks ago and is now not turning over, it could just be a dead battery or the electrical system is fried....OR...anything in between. It's time to trouble shoot. Put a known good battery in, make sure all connections are clean and tight, and bump the key. Don't start it without water & muffs.

If the switch is bad, turn it to the 'run' position and cross ther starter terminal with the 12v+ cable (if it's an I/O) and see if the starter engages. Better to bring a mechanic with you if you can, if you're not comfortable with troubleshooting on the fly.

If the engine will not fire from the key with a good battery, try jumping directly to the starter. If it starts it will help you isolate the problem. If it won?t start it may be the starter. It also may be a neutral safety switch. Sometimes I need to wiggle my shifter to get it in the right position to get it to start.

Re: Bayliner Ciera wiring

Thanks so much. I haven't gone and looked at it because I don't have the money in hand but I at least have a starting point. I'm a little leery about the deal anyway because it's almost too good to be true so it makes me wonder if something major is wrong. Just for some opinion and at the risk of someone else jumping on it, here is the craigslist post: http://muncie.craigslist.org/boa/2556200844.html
Maybe the deal of a lifetime or stay away?

Worth taking a look at. Check floor, transom for rot. Make sure engine isn't locked up. Make sure they have a good title in hand and that the hull numbers on the title match the hull numbers on the boat.
