I am working on replacing the floor in my 1992 bayliner capri. Here are some pictures of what it looked like when i bought it. The guy said he ripped out all bad and just ran out of time before he could replace the floor. My question is with all the round curves on the boat how do i get the plywood to be sturdy enough? I have some experience working with wood but I need some pointers on how to go about this. I would appreciate any help. I know nothing about replacing a boat floor. thanks

Re: bayliner floor repair

Join the club..... I'm just getting ready to start my Bayliner Deck replacement as well. It's my first boat & I got it in the beginning of this summer. It had a softball size hole in the deck between the front seats. I just did a quick cover over with plywood & carpet to get the summer out of it. I'm planning on starting very soon as the weather here in the North East will be turning very soon. The best advice I would give you is do a search in this section on "Deck Replacement" & read-read-read. There are ton's of threads here & a bus load of information on how to go about it, what products to use, bla, bla, bla. I plan on starting my own rebuild thread with pictures all along the way, like many have done. Good luck & do the research, it's out there.

Welcome to iBoats!
First, it would help if you Back off a bit with the camera and give us a better perspective of what the deck looks like.
Second it appears you have foam in your boat. Have you checked it to make sure it is NOT water logged. If the PO removed the Old Deck because it was soft it might have been because ther was water below decks as well. You should do a core sample of the foam to determine if it is wet. If it is it will need to be removed and replaced. You will also need to determine if the stringers and the transom have been compromised. If they are water soaked you will need to replace them as well. There are plenty of examples here on the forum. You need to search using Deck Replacement, Soft Deck, etc for your search criteria. You can use cardboard to make templates for cutting the plywood to make your new deck. But I would strongly advise you to ensure that everything below the deck is "Good to Go" before you put your new Deck in place.

I'm just sayin...:D

Not trying to be a pest but....

The PO was replacing the floor because??? Usually it is because it had soft spots due to water intrusion. That also means the stringers could have been affected.
How did you check the transom and the stringers? The Correct way is to take a 3/8 inch drill bit and drill 3/4 inch deep holes. You should get light brown DRY shavings. If you get powder or dark brown WET shavings then your Stringers/Transom is wet and needs to be replaced. While you have the boat torn down to this condition, you should do a very good inspection of the transom/stringers to make SURE they are sound. If they are solid, use 3M 5200 to fill the holes. Do NOT use silicone.

I'm just sayin...:D
