Hello everybody. i am a newbie to the recreational boating scene. bought a used 84 15' capri bowrider. has a 91 ish Force 90 engine. I have a couple questions. 1st. the tilt for the motor does not seem to work. has a bar that fits in the holes i assume for trailering it tilted up. Am i correct in assuming it to help keep it off the hydraulics? 2nd. So Next is..I dont know what the 3 toggles are for on the dash. first lowest is a toggle, middle is a rubber booted toggle and the top is a small push button. nothing saying what they are. IM sure one will be for the tilt. otherwise..engine fires right up, hull is very good shape..needs interior help which im ok with.

thank you

Re: Bayliner Newbie

I'm going to guess those buttons are for:
-Horn (quick contact button)
-Lights (bow/stern)
-Booted toggle switch might have been for the trim/tilt.
Does your motor control/throttle handle have a small set of push buttons in the upper grab area? That would be the normal location for the trim/tilt...where it is nice and handy while you have your hand on the throttle.
However, I think there was also a dash toggle type switch available as well.
Your boat would not have come with a 90hp from Bayliner. Originally it would have had a 50hp I think and maybe....maybe optioned up to a 70hp.
Therefore someone has put the 90hp on there to up the power...fair enough.
However if they resused the original controls and the original controls did not have trim/tilt built-in then they would have to rig something onto the dash.
You never know, your trim/tilt might be work fine but just not be hooked up or hooked up properly.;)
Do your controls have the built-in/integral trim/tilt buttons?
My two bits.

Re: Bayliner Newbie

the Throttle/handle is a Morse unit and only has the one bar under it to release for drive and reverse. After looking more closely at the switches..seems non of them have power or operate anything. The lights dont work, horn or the tilt...so im thinking, like you suggested, something isnt hooked up. I know the previous owner put a new battery in so might just be a simple connection to the battery. That wil have to wait for the weekend. I attached a couple pics.

Thank you for the reply!!

The trim/tilt buttons, if they are there, would be little rubbery buttons normally be up on the inner grip size of the top of the control where you're thumb would normally rest while you grip the controls.
If that control never had trim/tilt you might just see a blank out plate or similar and that means those controls were not originally targeted for a trim/tilt motor.
First you have to try activating the trim/tilt manually at the back to find out if it operational in both directions. Frank Acampora and some of the other guys are pretty versant on how to for test this but post your request up in the Force area.
Good Luck;)

Thank you BP looks like the wires for the T/T are all there to the switches and snipped off at the battery..so got a wiring diagram and going to see what i actually have..and yes..the Throttle just has the blankout plates..so switches wil have to do:)

Re: Bayliner Newbie

Follow up on the tilt issue...well..stripped the wires and I remember telling my 12 year old son.."these wires are cut for a reason" which i figured that if there wasnt a problem then the terminals all would still be there. Well hooked up the wires and nothing..took the wires from the tilt/trim motor and ran direct to the battery and lots of spark but no motor movement. So..next we unscrewed the 2 bolts on the top of the tilt motor..pulled it up off the hyd. pump and low and behold..lots of red liquidy goop oozing out..lol..now..im no electrical motor guy but i dont think the windings are supposed to be covered in wet, red rusty looking goo...so..ill by a new pump motor combo, flush out the hyd. lines to be sure all is ok in the trim cylindr and the tilt cylinder..And..im ok with it..only 900 spent ont he boat..200 or so for a pump/motor..im still ahead. the engine turned out to be a 92..so thats even better..now, to find a deal on interior replacement!!:D
