I have finally restored an 83 Bayliner, with an AQ125A motor and all is running. The problem I am having is that I have read everywhere that the motor should be at WOT at roughly 4200-4400 RPMS. We have run this boat three times this year, and have yet to see it get above 3200 RPMS. I think the prop is an aluminum 15X17 and has a couple dings. Everything is new on the motor, so I am not quite sure how this boat can get any more HP. Everything sounds great on it now, and if I really want to hear it get more power, I can wiggle the arm on the accelerator pump to give it some more fuel. When I do this it may raise the RPMS 100 or so, but it is a long ways to get to that 4200 area.

Does anyone have this problem, or heard of it, and is this truely all I will get out of it?

The boat is a 19footer open bow and weighs approx 2500#'s I think. It has no waterlog to it, so I can't be over weighting it.

Re: Bayliner Performance

Sounds more like a throttle linkage adjustment, I have a simular set up and turn 4500 with a 14 1/4 x 17

Did you properly break in the cam? If you didn't you may have flattened a lobe or 16...

Re: Bayliner Performance

I have an 18 foot bowrider with the AQ131 engine, similiar hp as yours. It has a 15 X 17 prop, and I cannot open the engine up without it over revving, above 5 k. My boat only weighs 2000 lbs, which is lighter than yours. But I think it yours should perform better than what you are stating. I think you have an engine problem, possibly fuel, also check timing. What about compression?

Have a great day,

Rob.

Have you double ck'd your tach to make sure it is accurate?

I am getting about 4800 RPM with a 14x17 aluminum prop, two people, 3/4 tank fuel that is about 30 mph on the GPS.
