Bayliner Pricing

Well, Im about to get ready to restore my Cobia. It needs the stringers and a new transom. The transom fiberglass inside has to be replaced as i is cracked and coming apart. Maybe a blessing in disguise as it will make the transom wood removal easier but will add to the cost of restoration as I have to fiberglass that part. I was thinking on using some of them plastic compounds for the stringers but use wood for the transom.
I also want a different boat, I want something I can sleep in, so I am keeping my eyes open in craigslist for that. I think I have found a hull I like, I have not seen it in person but I was to address the collective and see what y'all think as far as price.
It is a 1990 Bayliner capri. Yes, I know the bayliners are famous for rot, but if I recal right that was on early models and not the 90+. It still has to be checked...

This is an excerpt of the ad
"1990 bayliner capri cuddy cabin, 19' boat, brand new upholstery (finished in beginning of last summer), boat kept covered, sits on galvanized trailer with good tires, boat rides GREAT and pulls tubers and skiers well, sits 7 and sleeps 4-5, modern looking boat for age, i peeled the clear coat off the hull due to flaking, kept boat polished for a nice shine. hull is in great shape, *toilet under seat in cabin*
the bad......NEEDS MOTOR WORK....boat still runs but only on 3 cylinders, 1 piston is gone and 2nd on the way, i've priced kits to repair, $500-$600, but lost interest due to 2nd boat project, this would be simple to a good mechanic or if you happen to have a motor this boat would be perfect for you......the motor is an outboard 120 HP Force (mercury build) brand new starter and trim pump! "

I could use the 115 hp from my cobia but other than that I think this could be it.
He is asking too much i believe, over $2k. He has title for both the boat and trailer.
I dont think is worth over 1k...

I know boat pricing varies from place to place but can you give me your thoughts?

Thanks!!!

Re: Bayliner Pricing

Well I think ANY 1990 fiberglass boat has a real good chance of being rotted so I don't think being a Bayliner adds or subtracts anything from that equation. You know what you're doing so I know you'll check it out carefully. Outboard cuddies are rare so it sounds like it could be a real nice find. Price is ridiculously high. Even if the hull is immaculate, $1k would be TOPS.

What is the deal with the clearcoat peeling off?....

I think i would pass on that one Nandy....
Also the "new" interior could be a cover up for neglect.Makes you wonder what is under that floor...

I looked at the same one on CL the other day....lol!

Re: Bayliner Pricing

Good questions. Also, call me crazy, but I'd like to know how a 19' boat sleeps 4-5 comfortably and seats 7??? My 29' sleeps two, not very comfortably and seats about 9. Maybe it sleeps 4-5 infants comfortably? Another question...regarding the "clear coat"...I was not aware anyone clear coated gel coat. Interesting concept, but does anyone do this or is the seller smoking something?

I'm with you. The boat in my sig will sleep 2 adults very comfortable (one in the v-berth and one in the mid-berth), but above that you're talking 2 adults kinda cramped, and 2 kids who'd be comfortable in either the v-berth or mid-berth.

My 24' Chris Craft slept 2 adults in somewhat tight quarters (the reason I bought the Four Winns).

A 19' Capri? 2 people tops, and they're gonna be cramped.

1990 Bayliners were still built poorly.

You obviously know what you could be getting into - at the same time, it could work out really well since you have the powerplant available. I'd take a look at least, you never know. As for price, I'd agree - too much, especially this time of year. Go with cash in hand and don't beat around the bush - if you want it, make a firm offer - pointing out the deficiencies. If he takes it great. If not, leave your name and number. Chances are good you'll get a call with in a day or two to come get it. Good luck.

Re: Bayliner Pricing

I sold my 87 Bayliner 2150 Capri 8 years ago for $2500 and it worked perfectly. No way I would spend $2K on that Bayliner even if the motor worked.

I would also never purchase a Bayliner again of that vintage. Hard to imagine why people actually try to restore these things. I would look for a higher quality boat to begin with if I was going to restore an older boat.

I wouldn't spend any time or money on a 1975 17' rotted boat. Its useful life is over.
At most, get the capri for about $800 and put your motor on it. But then you have a 1975 motor that has outlived its useful life--first major problem and time to kick it to the curb. You may have bought yourself another season or two of boating, a lot of work and a lot of down time.
When you go look at the cuddy, get the seller, his wife, your wife and you all to sit inside and close the door; stay there for 30 minutes. Then decide about its capacity.
IOW keep shopping and replace your boat. Look around the coast. Those boats and motors are a dime a dozen.

I will definitely go and take a look at it. Who knows, I might come back with a very funny story to tell...

Man, that's an ugly boat.
I happen to like Bayliners looks...

Yup, that is the one. That was my first impression, clearcoat??? is he talking about oxidation? I would have to check it all good. No matter what I look, in my price range is going to be old... Im not set on this one but I want to take a look at it.

Im sure the max number of people in the cabin is exaggerated as it is pretty much anywhere. The lake sleeping is mostly for me and the gf but if the kids are coming we will probably will end up camping on the shore. We are all used to camp in close quarters so as long as we dont have to be physically and literally on top of everyone else we will be alright.

Im not sure I agree with you that the 1975 combo has outrun its life. The hull has rot but all the other hardware and the hull is fine for exception of where that guy hit it 2 years or so ago, which I was repairing already. So if I replace the rotten wood then the boat is pretty much as good as new but it would still be a boat that does not have a cabin which is why I was looking at this boat. The motor is another story. It is a 115 evinrude and I dont think it is anywhere near the end of it useful life. If it breaks anything then most any parts can be found. Now, that force is a different story.... In my price range pretty much anything I will look at will have a chance at rot, heck, if I get one or 2 season before I have to fix it that is already a plus, im looking at a resto right now...

I appreciate everyone's input, It confirms what I thought that the price is way high.

Look at the boat in my signature....it's a 1990 Bayliner 2002 Capri Cuddy. YES they do rot. Mine needed the deck replaced and LOTS of water logged 'floation' foam had to be removed. A pretty hull IMHO , but check it well for water logged foam....the only thing with a worse reputation than a Bayliner , is a Force engine.....lol

Re: Bayliner Pricing

Even if the Capri was made by a "real" boat mfg. I would hate them. PITA to get in and out of on the trailer when working on them.

Just because the Farce engine has a black (Merc) cowling it is still a Farce pos.
