I am considering buying an 84 bayliner cuddy for cheap, the guy who is selling it to me basiclly restored the entire boat in the past 3-5 years he said the upholstry needs a little work still and the engine needs put back together, not sure what parts are off the engine but im assuming the timing needs set and a few more bolt on parts need put back together. The guy told me it ran less than 3 years ago and only took the parts off to paint the engine. Since then he bought a new boat and asked me if i was interested in buying this one. My questions are... Should there be any problems if I was to put all the parts back on the engine, will it run? It has a volvo penta engine (i think thats how its spelled), are they hard to work on? and Is the can there be any other engines that have the same bolt up to the drive?

There is no way in the world someone can honestly answer that question.
If it is assembled properly using the needed marine parts then there is no reason it shouldn't. However sitting that long there's a good possibility the cylinder walls are rusted. Guarantee the carb needs an overhaul, and on and on.
Yes, it is VOLVO PENTA. It is a GM based engine so you can breathe a little easier on obtaining parts. Most stock automotive parts are interchangeable - I said most, not all.
Do yourself a favor and have a qualified mechanic take a look at it. Maybe even a couple for good measure.

Thanks for the reply, I can put pictures up if anyone wants to see them. My project may not be that interesting to you folks but this is my first boat project.... It is very interesting to me. Never did a boat before, (have done several other projects tractors and trucks). Are the Selco engine guides any help? I used the Hanes guides for truck engines they helped alot, will this guide be as helpful?

we love pictures, post em up. I find the Seloc manuals very helpful. they are step by step, and even rate stuff by difficulty level too.

I thought that the Volvo motors in the 80's were the same 4 cylinder motors they used in cars (well the block at any rate).

Pretty much every modern inboard or I/O engine is nothing more than a
'marinized' version of its automotive counterpart. Of course I can only speak for the gassers, There was a time back when GM tried the ole' diesel trick with a gas block - anybody remember that fiasco? It wasn't pretty to say the least.
But you are right Doc - they all start with the same casting.

so I have not uploaded pictures yet i will try to do so soon. I have the motor in pieces which is how i received it, now what all needs to be painted to prevent rust? I already wire brushed the oil pan and block and painted with a rustolium engine paint, the valve cover?, Intake manifold? not sure what else there is to be painted. Any advice is helpful.
