I would say the Stingray hull has more effort put into makeing it go fast :)

Which really does not make it the best pick for every boater

What your using it for makes a big difference in what kind of boat you'll want. No 18' boat is going to be a very good ride in anything but perfect conditions. Wakes from other boats on the weekend really get to you on an 18' boat.

I've had both a 20' Bayliner and a 22' Stingray. The Stingray had a better fit and more options. Both were OK boats.

My friends 20' Sea Ray rides better in chop than the 22' Stingray but the Stingray will outrun him.

You might want to consider using the $15k for a bigger used boat with a bigger powerplant.

:| Currently my or Welcraft's 186ss will eat a 2- 3 foot chop with ease, actually any 18' with a 8 foot beam and a 20 degree deadrise will handle a 2-3 foot chop with realative ease they just might not be 15k........... take a close look @ Glastron they once owned the glass markert and are attempting a serious come back and have a value leader which is called the sx series i believe.

i own a 2005 glastron sx 170 with a 150 and it will take on any inland lake chop with ease(2-4 ft waves) and even lake Michigan chop. every person who has been on my boat that is not familiar with it is amazed at how smooth and comfortable the ride is. I get compliments left and right.

Glastron is known for having great hulls and using break through technology in their boats like their SSV hull design and the VEC technology to make them competitive in the small fiberglass boat market.

If i were you, id take a close look at the glastron lineup of 17-18 foot runabouts. They pack a lot of goodies and technology for the price and they look great too.

The date on the second pic is wrong by the way

Good food for thought on spending the same $$ on a bigger used boat. But those new 18 footers are VERY tempting to newbies for reasons that can be valid: Smaller boat fits easier in a garage. Smaller boat does not need so big a SUV/truck to tow it. New boat can be easier to finance than used. Here is a similar thread -

As for chop, I'm glad I never had to run my 19' Chris-Craft in 3' chop. As I have do doubt it would have beaten me to pieces. 2' chop was brutal enough. Here is another thread on chop -

Re: bayliner vrs stingray 18 ft

i understand about waves and boats . not my first. the prpblem is i am sick and tired on working on them and wait a boat with a wattantee. i just ost a piston on my 17ft 80 hp motor. i am the only one to use this boat as my 13 y/o does not like boats..video games he likes. i under stant you pay for what you get but i can pass on real rough days. my biggest boat was a 21ft.i like the glasstron. thanks for the pictures. i looked at bayliners 13k+tax i know they are below avg . but nada for 05 has value @ 8k 1 year old as stingrays can sell me an 2007 for 15 k but nada says 05 is worth over 12k ..i like the glasstron. but i live in philly and our season is ending soon. i might wait till boat show and get one thats a deal and let these 1.5 months just slip away
thanks all

I don't see Glastron as a miracle boat. For for the most bang-for-the-buck I would try hard to make a Glastron GX 185 work -

Maybe find a dealer with a left-over?

I did not say glastron is a miracle boat nor did i intend to make it seem that way. I just said that i like the technologies they impliment and feel that they use them to benefit the boating world.

Glastron and other boats such as larson who are owned by GENMAR, were one of the first manufacturers to have a computer monitered closed molding process which requires no wood in nearly the whole boat. This is called VEC.

To me, that was important when i was buying a new boat because it gave me the peace of mind knowing that i have a LIFETIME warrenty on the boats hull, stringers, floor, deck, and transom which is transferable to the next owner which will increase my resale value.

Im not trying to sell him into glastron boats, im just sharing my experiences and knowledge about it to him so he knows what is out there.

Pound for pound Stingray boats are the fastest of the lot. It all depends on what you want to use it for. No matter what anyone says though an 18' boat can't take 2' waves the way a 22' boat can. It's one thing to cross a wake from another boat. It's a much different issue when the waves are constant and coming at you from different directions like on a weekend at a bigger lake. The Stingray hull is fast, but it rides rougher than a Regal.

Hey, 05, Your Glastron is gorgeous and I agree on them being a leading technology builder. I used to live in Austin and boat on the Highland Lakes. Lotta good looking Glastrons there......course at the time I had stripes on my arms (not prison stripes) and couldn't afford one. :'(

thanks texas for your compliments, i appreciate it. The boat is what it is, and i love everything about it. I think finally glastron is making a strong and steady comeback, and is eventually going to become one of the top manufacturers in small runabouts just as they were in the 50's and 60's.

Re: bayliner vrs stingray 18 ft

I just bought a 2006 Bayliner 185 with a 135hp mercruiser. I went new for not having to worry about repairs and the warranty. I looked at stingrays and glastrons but they were more expensive. They looked to have a better finish but since they used similar engines I went with the less expensive bayliner.

I am very happy so far, with the 135 I have hit about 46mph (or atleast that's what the speedo says) with just two of us in the boat. I can easily get to 42 with 4-5 people. No problems towing inflatables either. Although Bayliner can do better with the fit and finish, it is still a nice boat. I only paid about 14,500 and added a $500 extended warranty for a total of 5 years. I couldn't be happier so far.
