Bayliner With Mercury 150 for $500

Yesterday I looked at a Bayliner a guy is selling. The deck and seats are totally rotted. At a glance the transom looks good. The trailer is awesome and would fit my boat perfect. My trailer needs some work. It has a Mercury Force 1 150hrs on it. Dont know what year yet. The guy wants $500 for it and I think I can get it for less. My bowrider, which is being converted to center console, had a 90 hrs johnson but is rated for a 150hrs. I want the Bay liner mostly for the 150 and trailer. Matbe restore the bayliner later to sell.

The big problem is the skeg on the lower unit is broke off Can a new be cut and welded back on? Can it be done without taking a part the lower unit?

my boat same way w/ force 85 hp motor w/ trailer good price if uask me $500.

i would take it if it has a clean title make it a project boat fix it up sell to neghbor for 2-4 times the amount u paid for it

Repairing the skeg should be no problem for a compatent welder.

or you can install a skeg guard if enough is left. there are many still running with broken skegs. do the basics, compression, spark, lower unit for water. if good. take the motor off, strip boat, put sign on it "Free Boat". i've gotten rid of 3 this way. save dump fee. deliver, push off trailer in their back yard.

i had one of our best welders in our city weld a new skeg in an i/o....

it worked......he was done in a few minits....

(the bottom 2/3s of it was gone. so there was a bit left on)

having said that ive also heard, that the heat from the weld woll melt the seals in the lower unit......

mine worked....musta got lucky........

as for the boat and the price......he who hesitates............

the trlr is worth it....(i havent seen it, only you know)
you probably get a lower unit at a swap meet, if you really needed one.

if you dont want to make money from it...do what td said.....if you do......drop in a new floor....forget the foam/stringers...put your old motor on it...use your old trlr and sell it as a project boat.....for $1500....
or...do it all right and charge full price!......

i know a guy in the seventies that made an extra $2000 a month by just putting paint and tires on cars..and selling them.

Like td said if there is a little left on it you can use a "skeggard" and be done with that problem. Depending on what you want to do, make money, project, etc. with as many bayliners as there are out there you could part it out and easily make all of your money back and still keep the stuff you want.. If I had a place to store it I would do it for sure.

Do not try to restore that rotted boat, other than the engine and trailer it's worthless (or less!). IF you can strip a few items off and sell them on ebay then even better. Then either try to give it away or pay the disposal cost.

IMO, only a fool tries to restore a boat that has little value even when restored! Certainly not what it costs even figuring your EXTENSIVE labor as "free"! That one sounds too far gone to deal with.

Great deal for the motor (if working) and the trailer! Of course, the Force engines create a lot of swearing when it comes time to find parts at a reasonable price!!!!!

I would stick with your Johnson 90 and part out the Force. It may say Mercury on it, but it's really still a Chrysler under the paint... The 150 wasn't their best effort, at that. Part it out, get your $500 back, and keep the trailer for your other boat as a freebie...
